Hessen Haus
Hessen Haus is a German bierhall and resturant off Court Ave.
I went to their Oktoberfest last year, but hadn't actually gotten down there to eat.
I had: Rind Rouladen, which they describe as:
Tender strips of sirloin wrapped around a pickle, spicy mustard, onions and bacon then braised and covered in a brown sauce. Served with mashed potatoes and pickled red cabbage.
Shannon had the Schweine Haxen, which they descibe as:
Extra large pork shank, served with sauerkraut and German potato salad.
My stuff was pretty good. You got a good taste of the brown sauce, the beef and then the pickle and mustard kinda just shortly burst up and lingered for a little bit. The mashed potatoes and gravy were very good. The pickled red cabbage was slightly sweet and surprisingly good.
I tasted Shannon's Pork Shank, which I thought was very tender and very tasty. The potato that came with it was peeled and had a sort of lightly salty outer layer and then baked. It was yummy. I tried her sauerkraut and being that I am not a very big fan of sauerkraut, I was surprised at how much I liked it.
After we had finished and the wiatress cleared away our plates, I was kinda wanting a bit more of the sauerkraut..
We decided not to have dessert elsewhere.
