Wedding stuffs and fun with math and etc

So I got a call yesterday from That Irish Shoppe and they told me that they got the replacement box for the flutes that we ordered and the cake knife and server were there if we wanted to have them.

So I was a bit suprised by the box. They were nice wooden boxes, lined with cloth. So they were a quite bit better then the black cardboard like boxes that we had gotten before. So the cake server and knife were pretty and the quality that I've come to expect from Mullingar Pewter. So I ended up getting those too. I think as far as that goes we just have to get some presents for people in our wedding and the Nordic Wedding spoons (which we should get a better idea about when we go up to NE Iowa this weekend).

Last night Shannon started to work on practicing the math stuff for her vet tech exam, and I helped her out a bit...some I did good at, others not so good. I think we were using the wrong formula though...We're gonna work on it some more tonight. I vaguely remember some of it from Chemistry, but I don't think I've taken a chemistry class in 8 years...

Jen stopped by last night to drop off maps of Northern Iowa, and so we broke out our new camping gear and setup our new tent. It was pretty easy to setup...We got it up and down in about 30 minutes (and that's the first time too). I don't think it'll be so bad, camping this weekend. The air mattress and etc will certainly make it a lot easier to sleep on the ground. I still worry about my condition on CPAPless sleep. I'll probably just be tired. But it's gonna be like not really sleeping for 2 overnights... I supposed if I really wanted to I could get a battery pack for it, I think they said something about it, when I first got it...but considering how expensive that thing was, I'm guessing that a battery would be too (looks around the internet and finds a battery pack for ~$400). Oh well...I guess my only task is to remember to bring earplugs for everyone else.

Busy Weekend (Cameron's Party)

So after Shannon finished work on Saturday we packed up the car and headed towards Cedar Rapids.

Our First stop, was West Side Sewing, where we met up with Shannon's Mom to look at lace for her dress. Shannon ended up getting a nice lace, and it better be, since it was $90 something for 3/4th's of a yard of lace fabric.

Then we headed to my parents to look for pictures of me during my youth...It was interesting. Shannon saw pictures of my grandparents, and cousins and what not, plus quite a few of my pictures from the youth. It was kind of fun looking down memory lane. We ending by picking out a couple of slides (which we will get processed) and a couple of school type pictures.

Then around 6:PM we headed over to to the Matta's for Cameron's Party. Cam has been in Japan for a while and I've not seen him for quite a while. So it was fun to catch up and all that. Attending the party was: Nathan & Jenny (hosts) (and Taylor and Cali), Scott, Wade, Brett (his wife and kid), Clif, Myself & Shannon and of course Cameron. There was much noshing of food (burgers, hot dogs, etc), drinking of booze and what not.

Very early on in the night I got to test drive Wade's WRX (replacing his old car). It was fun to drive. It had a few things that I didn't like. I like the VTEC in my car, where when you hit around 6000 RPM you get a extra boost of power. I thought the gearing ratio was a bit wide between first and second gear. It seemed to me that it shouldn't drop the RPM so much when going into second...but that's just me...maybe I'm getting spoiled by 6 gears.

Cameron had brought some beer (Redhook ESB and another one), Nathan let me try one of his Bell's Brewery beers (which was just delicious).

Around 8:30, I think, a couple of people left to participate in a "raid" on WoW. Which, in my opinion, was extraordinarily lame. Yes I understand that there were previous commitments and all that, but, you know...*sigh*

My boss called, with two other Directors to ask me a question about work (I was on call that weekend), and I believe this is what I said, "I would like to preface my answer by stating that I'm drunk and you may not be able to trust my opinion". However Clif agreed with what I said, so they got off the phone.

Bret and crew left a bit later to put their child to bed.

Anyways, the night continued on and Cam told us stories of Japan, and we eventually headed downstairs. Jenny and Shannon watched When Harry met Sally, and Clif, Cam, Nate and I started playing Air Hockey. Nathan opened up a bottle of a 10 year old port (I think), I'd provide more details, but I'm not good with names. It was something that Jenny's mom picked up on her travels. It was actually very good, and I enjoyed it...and a lot of it too. He also opened up a bottle of cheap white wine (He's trying to find something inexspenive to keep around the house) that I thought was...well...awful (again the name escapes me).

Air hockey moved along to triple puck air hockey, and laughing at the drunk Sam (which was ok, cause I was drunk and being silly). Nathan actually recorded me playing it that way.

A bit later the party simmered out and people left and we head upstairs to the Matta's spare bedroom.

The next morning, after a bit of waking up early, playing with Taylor and Cali, and breakfast, we headed to my parents to see if my mom had found some more cute kid pictures of me (she hadn't) but she did dig up some chives and put them in a bucket for me to trasfer to my yard, so I can have fresh chives whenever I want. My mom had decided to do some serious cooking and had some rubarb cake and corn beef making...but it wouldn't be ready until much later in the day, and we had plans, so we headed off.

Next, we went to Shannon's parents, and went through her photo album and picked out a few pictures of herself, and we also looked at some table decorations and decorations for the rooms. Shannon's Mom does have quite the eye where that goes. We also made a suggestion about glass tiles (that was given to us by the Matta's) from a hardware store (as opposed to the expensive ones from the craft stores).

We then headed back to Des Moines, stopped by the house, dropped off the things, planted the chives (on the side of the house near the two bed of flowers). And then headed out west to go to Jordan Creek for Shannon to buy a new dress for Adam's and Tiff's wedding. I wondered off and checked out the macbooks (deciding if I wanted a black one). I also ended up getting a new pair of sandals. Shannon tried on a lot of things but wasn't happy with the look of most of them (the one dress I think she liked she didn't want to have one that was strapless). We headed over to Target (where she looked some more) where I got some water for my machine and picked out a present for the wedding. Then we headed off to try to find stores around the target that had clothes, but most of them weren't open on sunday or at least past 5 on sunday. We wanted to go eat and Fudruckers, but it was way to busy, so we went back and tried to go to crave (not open on sunday) and ended up at Wok in Motion (good food, not bad price).

Then we thought we would check out Kohl's (she got the outfit she bought for the engagement pictures there), but by the time we got there they were about to close (10 minutes), so we headed home. Shannon was pretty upset, by all this. We spent the short rest of the Sunday watching a bit of DVR'd TV and then went to bed.

New Compy

So I did it...I ordered us a MacBook...that's right, I'm going to the Mac...

It'll mostly be for Shannon, but I will, without a doubt, be using it as well.

Oh yeah...engagement pictures..

We had engagement photo's taken at the Greenwood Park Rose Garden behind the art center. We are pretty happy with a few of 'em (which is pretty much all you need).

We already printed out some and gave to parents (who will then give to grandparents) and Nate and Jenny and Shannon's Sister.

I'll eventually get one up here somewheres.

Some Stuff...

So on monday night we had a meeting with the person that will be Pastor of our wedding. He seemed pretty cool, but while we were about to headed over there it just poured on our car...of course it almost stopped by the time we got there, and we had there was a beautiful rainbow. We talked about how we met, what we like in each other and all that, and we went away with an assignment (to write what we expect out of the marriage and how we expect to accomplish it) and bring it back when we meet again. He is an assistant pastor at a church (I forget which one) but he is also a chaplain at Iowa Health Des Moines, which is kind of funny since I work for Iowa Health System (sort of like the parent company).

Last night at Chris and Pat's we watched The Apartment, which, while it was good, it wasn't exactly great, and I don't understand why it was on the list AND I dont understand why it won all those academy awards... Oh well it was a good time. The night started off a bit odd, when we went ot the Jimmy John's over there and went to get a sandwhich, and we found that...well...they didn't have any bread....It's 6:30 (dinner rush not over yet) and they didn't have any bread...and wouldn't for another 30-45 minutes...that's a treat. We ended up ordering pizza.

lunch

So I was halfway through making my lunch this morning and I went to open the fridge, after finishing my sandwhich and I remembered that I had left over meatloaf to make a sandwhich out of...

Damn

Oh well, there's always tomarrow.

Oh and being back after five days makes me tired...at least I'm halfway through the day.

Kitty Report and one more thing

Gracie, who hid the entire time the Matta's were here (under our bed, mostly), was actually out and wandering around a mere 5 hours after they left...

Why is this good? Normally it's been days before she'd wander around like she owns th place.

Oh and Nathan told me that Cameron had mentioned that I have a huge journal and must spend a lot of time on it. And it is true, I do. But I think it's nice to write things out and sometimes when I go back and read it provides more detail that I may have forgotten (my memory isn't the best). I'm looking forward to seeing them both this weekend (Cameron's in Iowa (from Japan) for a few weeks and the Matta's are throwing a party on Saturday).

Weekend with the Mattas (starting with some days off)

So I had Thursday off too, so I spent part of the day cleaning, playing computer games, napping...it was nice. Thursday night we were supposed to stock up on groceries, but apprently forgot. Friday, I had off too, and I finished cleaning, mowed the lawn, took my car into Jordan, did the grocery shopping, and when Shannon got home, we went down to subway and got dinner. Shortly after we finished, we greeted Nathan and Jenny and Taylor and Cali.

So they got here, settled in and put Taylor to bed and we stayed up for a bit and chatted. And then we all headed to bed.

Saturday, I was woken up by Shannon complaining about my mask, and a little bit later, by noises of Taylor waking up in the morning. So I took a shower and headed down stairs to watch a bit of Dora the Explorer (sooooo....repetitive (which is good for kids, I guess)) while I waited for the 7:AM to roll around so I could head down to La Mie to pick up some challah from La Mie to make some French Toast.

So at around that time, I headed down, picked up two loaves and a couple of the roasted red pepper and cheese danishes.

Then I made breakfast. vanilla cinnamon French toast, bacon, sausage (both patties and link), which went over pretty well.

After breakfast was cleaned up and preperations were made, we headed out into the brisk morning down to the Des Moines Farmer's Market. This was all of our first time there. It was a lot bigger then I thought it would be. We searched a little while and then ended up parking in a lot (for pay) near the court house and headed over. Lots of fresh flowers, fruit, vegatables, cheses, meats, crafts, wines (with samples), some odder processed foods (soy nuts?), and booths selling shirts, food booths and etc. Nathan and Jenny picked up a couple of packages of soy nuts (jalapeno and Cheddar, lightly salted) and we got a small little package of Blue Cheese. Next week I have plans to pick up some buffalo, some white cheddar (from Maytag Dairy Farms) and maybe some baby swiss (depending on what they have). I'm also gonna pick up some Elk (low in fat (not as low as buffalo)), and maybe some hormone/drug free cattle. I'll be headed down there early (when it opens) so that I can make sure I get what I want.

We headed over to Heartland Homebrew Supply. Nathan got quite a few things that he needed to make some home brewed beer. While we were there, Cali sort of exploded and messed herself and her clothes as babies can do. So instead of continuing our journey, we made a trip back to my house, to clean up and have some lunch. Grilled Cheese! I made a stack of sandwiches and Nathan, acting as my sou chef, made the rest of them while we chatted (played a little with Taylor too).

After lunch was had, naps were taken, and then we headed out again.

Our first stop was Penzey's Spices, which Jenny wanted to go to, but has also been recomenned by Jerry & Renee and Neal (from work), it was my first trip there. I had an idea of what I wanted, but couldn't remember. I know that I liked this spice that my older sister Emily had brought back from Hungray, but I couldn't remember what it was. So I called my Mom and got the information from her. I even asked if she wanted some (since it's been a while since Emily has been to Hungray. So we ended up getting two kinds of paprika, both of which aren't what we get here normally and some peppercorns. The Matta's got some peppercorns too...they may have gotten some other stuff, but I'm not sure what.

Then we were off to CostCo. Shannon and I picked up a few things, but mostly we were there to pick up some of the Kirkland's Best baby wipes, that they seem to love so much. And then it was back home again.

After a bit, Nathan and I headed out to pick up stuff for dinner. We stopped first at Dahl's to pick up a few things for dinner and dessert. I picked up some meat for meat loaf (beef, veal and pork) and some fresh spices and potatoes and some bacon. Nathan picked up a few things (that I didn't already have in stock at my house) to make molten cakes.

We then headed to Ingersoll Wine and Spirits. It was nice to go to a liqour store, with someone that appreciates the whole spectrum of booze like I do. We looked at scotches, whiskeys, sampled some wines and bought one of them. I ended up a bottle of Seven Deadly Zins and Nathan bought a bottle of Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel (2004) and a bottle of P. J. Valckenberg Modonna Eiswein. Eiswein is a very interesting way to make wine.

Afterwards, we made our last stop at Stam for some chocolate for the cakes (and a little help for the Mother's day present for Jenny from Taylor and Cali). And I did something that I thought wasn't possible, I went in, and didn't actually buy anything there....

We came home and I started making dinner. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes with chives, and some warmed up Challah. While doing that Nathan and Jenny switched of in making the molten cakes (depending on who was needed to care for the kids). I feel crowded in the kitchen, just when I'm in there, with two, it's a bit more. But it worked out. The Meatloaf, like always, took longer then I expected, and the potatoes shorter. I added a bit to much milk to the potatoes and boiled them a bit to long, so they came out to be a bit more creamy then they should've, but the the meatloaf turned out really well. It got good reviews all around.

Taylor got put to bed (stories and etc abounding) and while that was happening I held and danced with Cali while Jenny and Shannon ate their dessert (it's not to often a Mom get's a break from the kids to enjoy chocolate :). A bit later I got my dessert and then later then that, Nathan got his. Afterwards, we opened up the Eiswein and drank that as an after dinner dessert. We originally split it up into three glasses, at my suggestion, but when Shannon sampled it, we had to open it split it up into four glasses...

We then sat down and watched Super Troupers (since Jenny and Nathan hadn't seen it before). And then went to bed.

Sunday morning, Nathan made breakfast (Scrambled eggs and bacon and Challah Toast), and then we headed to Blank Park Zoo. First trips all around (yes I've lived in Des Moines for 4 years without ever going to the zoo). It was fun, it was about exactly the right attention span for Taylor. Cali slept or was awake peacefully in her stroller for pretty much the entire time. The zoo was short, but it felt very close, so you did get close to most of the animals there. Afterwards we went for lunch, but I was totally blanking and couldn't come up with anything (or the things I came up with where closed Sundays), and Cali was and Taylor were hungry, so we ended up at Baker's Square.

Lunch was ok, but Cali got fed and Taylor was full (and about to nap) so we came back home and packed them up and sent 'em home.

A few highlights. Taylor and Cali are beautiful little girls, although Taylor is quite a rambunxious (though nothing touching the spirit of Spencer and Dallin). Nathan and Jenny have asked us to be the secondary guardians of the girls if the worst should happen (So we would be their guardians if for some reason Nathan's older sister couldn't take them). We are thinking on the matter.

I'm looking forward to seeing them again next weekend, and they did make a good point, we are either in feast or famine (New years and Christmas and then nothing until now). And we will rectify that in the future.

Showing Adam a good time

So I had the day off yesterday, so I was lazy most of the day...I did fix the light in the bathroom with a combination of a hing and velcro (yes velcro).

Around 3:30 PM I headed to the back to get some cash, Target to get a bucket and a marker and then Starbucks to get a coffee (it was on my way, normally I don't go there).

I met up with Josh at his house, and after he changed, we headed over to get Adam.

I drove to Omaha...and when we got there we headed into town and went to Sushi Ichiban (which was apparently inside a Japaneese Resturant).

The Sushi was actually pretty good, not the best I've had, they lost points for some of them actually crumbling while they got picked up. It was served on a big wooden boat.

The highlight of the meal, at least for me, was Ginza No Suzume Shochu, which, apprently is a 40 proof Sake, which is off dry and light bodyied...well it pretty much tasted like water and was warm on the way down. It was quite nice. It was served in a container where they could put ice in the side to keep it cold, through the meal.

After dinner we stopped for gas and then headed over to Sokol Underground. We headed in an drank for a while, waiting for the show to start. We chatted and drank and vice versa.

First up was Mac Lethal supported by Joe Good, who I found to be quite entertaining, so much so that I bought two of his albums (The Love Potion Collection 2 (Mac Lethal) and Hi, May I Help You (Joe Good)). Good beats and good lyrics and good topics. Ranging from the silly (fighting over a baby's mama) to more serious...

After that, we had Los Nativos come on stage. They were...good, but not something that I would've picked out. I just didn't really connect to it.

After that was Brother Ali. And, like before, he put on a great show. The crowd started to pack in and the heat started to rise. The good brother maintained a masterful control over the crowd.

Afterwards, there was a long wait, which gave a chance for even more people to crowd in and the temp to rise more.

Atmosphere took the stage. Slug was initially supported by both Brother Ali and one of the guys from Los Nativos. It was quite good and a fun time, lots of crowd participation. The set went on, and his backing band came out to help with the show. It was a fun time.

Behind Josh and I was a dolt who was jamming to the music and holding his full beer...or more accuratly, spilling his beer on to our shoes. Over and over he did this...Many thoughts of violence crossed both our minds, but neither of us acted on it.

It was near this time that I was getting to hot for me. During the encore, I actually had to leave the crowd to get a glass of water. But I came back and with water and ice and I was good for the rest of the show.

Leaving the heat into the cool Omaha air, was very nice. We headed to the car and then to on the interstate. We stopped at a gas station somewhere's in Iowa and then drove the rest of the way home (I fell asleep somewheres in there).

I got home around 3:00 or so and got to bed around 3:30.

By the sounds of it, Adam did have a good time, which is the whole point of the excersize.

Conflicted emotions

So I'm excited that I got a ticket to go see Radiohead, however, I'm kinda pissed that it only gave my one and not two, and good lord 3 for all three of us.

I'm guessing it was my error, but concerts are more fun when you go with people you know that want to be there.

*sigh*

Oh and even if I didn't want to go, I'm screwed cause it's will call, so I can't sell it or even give it to someone else, cause they say they'll id me and need the CC that it was purchased with...so...yeah..
