Game Night - November 2014

After having decreasing turn out for a while, with blips here and there.  Sometimes enough to have two games going at a time, but most often, just one.  This led to the decrease to every other month, and I was thinking about decreasing it down to every quarter.  People have busy lives and it's understandable and I accept that.

This time we had 3, (4 if you count Kellen's game) games going at the same time.  I was quite happy with how everything was turning out (other then me starting to fall asleep at the end).

Good Stuffs.

2014 - Week 44 Cooking Results & a bit of Alton Brown fun

We, Joseph, Shannon and I, had bought tickets a while back to see the Alton Brown Edible Inevitable Tour.  I'm a fan of the mixture of science and humor.  We had pretty good seats (orchestra area), and really enjoyed the show.  At the time of one of the volunteer portions, Joseph made it abundantly clear that he wanted to be chosen, and was.  The show overall was very entertaining for all of us (me, food lover (cooker and eater); Joseph, food professional; and Shannon, food lover (eater)).  So if it is coming to your town, give it a go.  Video screens are available even for the not so close seats.  Alton Brown did go to a number of the places I suggested during a semi-drunken (ok mostly drunken) state (not that he followed my list, but apparently I'm not the only one who suggested the items).

Last night, I went off on a man-date with JZ and a number of other dudes where the plan was to play a bunch of Munchkin, but we ended up playing mostly Dominion (super fun, super variable), then a bit of Munchkin.  Let it be recorded for history that this was the first time that Drew has seen me not win at Munchkin (I've not won a bunch of times).  While we were doing that Shannon was off having a lady-date seeing St. Vincent with the elusive Courtney at the Fleur.  Pretty good week, over all.  Though there were some food failures this week.

The BA Patty Melt

So while I think I had heard using mayonnaise for grilled cheese or things like that was good and I Know I've used mayo to crisp up and keep my turkey moist (as opposed to pork fat, which I've also done).  Maybe I'm just kidding myself though.

These right here, were amazing.  Crisp crust on the bread, good meat mixture.  Good mixture of cheeses (Prairie Breeze and Prairie Rose).  Cooked down onions.

So damn good.  I'll be making this again, for sure.

Chili (today)

Seared in the pan, transferred to the crock-pot, fond from the pan gotten up and added to crock-pot...er slow cooker (I have no idea what the brand of my slow cooker is).  Then I slowly simmered it over the next while.  Pretty good, less spicy (on purpose).  Its not that I don't want it spicy, it's that I don't think I can so much take it anymore.  Anyways generally happy with the results.  Maybe vinegar should be a late add to it.  it brightened it up when you add a few dashes of Frank's Red Hot to the dish...  I'll have to think on that.

Wok-Fried Black Pepper Beef and Celery

I couldn't find gia vi...ok I didn't even bother looking for gia vi.  I was going to make my own, but was once again limited by time (I needed to head off to my man-date).  So basically this recipe is only represented by the fact that I used the ingredients to some extent.  I cut the beef, then marinated it for a little bit in a combination of the spices, soy sauce, sugar, fish sauce and some Sriracha.  I chopped up the celery, used the onions I had leftover and it just came together.  Served over some heated up leftover rice, a quick dinner, used some leftovers and still quite good.

Rice and Beans with Fried Eggs (Modified)

This counted as a double failure this week.  So the thought was, hey, I've got some extra beans because the Slow cooker isn't as big as my Chantal pot, add some more liquids bam, use the beans and avoid buying (a cheap) can of beans.  This didn't work out because of timing.  One night I got home late from work, the other time the time was limited by going out to the Alton Brown show.  Either way it just kept being frustrating, and we just had eggs and toast instead.  So I'm going to actually follow the damn recipe...

Tree Trimming, before and after

So a lady from the city stopped by, and at first, my neighbor was all excited because she thought her numerous complaints about the lack of curbs on Franklin Avenue had finally had some notice taken.  But it was not that.  Apparently someone had complained about the obstructed view from 43rd to Franklin, while going left.  This was certainly a justifiable complaint.  Most springs and fall we cut back the tree sprouts that come up from around the tree in our front yard.  So, this picture here, is a nice view of what the tree looked like a year ago (I got tired of looking for a picture of my own).  It's gotten a bit bushier since then.  I saw the point and started to get to work.  I got the view cleared and on the advice and help of my neighbor across the street (Lonny) we proceeded to cut back all the other parts of trees and used his electrical saw to trim the tree and make it look, well, tree like.

Tree After

There are a lot of cut pieces left over.

The cut leavings

I have to say, that the tree does look a lot better but the 2 days of effort (so far) have really been taxing to myself.  Anyways, one more thing to do, and it'll be all gone.

Thanks to Sean of Juan O'Sullivan's for coming by and hauling away and helping load the brush pile.

2014 - Week 10 Cooking

I went to add more beer to storage and then saw that the shelf was leaning a bit due to the weight.  So I decided that it needed to be moved to the lowest level which is not actually a shelf, but the floor of the closet.  After moving I also did an audit of what was in there.  I haven't decided if I'd post that or not.  It's not as if there is anything of extraordinary value in there (oldest thing is 10 years old).

We also bought a new bed in the past week.  After letting it warm up for more than 24 hours we slept on the tempur-pedic last night for the first time.  It took a while for it to warm up to my body and become softer and supportive.  I'm still testing, but I did wake up a few times, when I shifted just a little, but that is not out of the norm for me.  Shannon seems generally pleased.  But we'll see how it goes over the next while.  I got a new pillow (cooling), so far I'm not a fan of how it is, but I'm fairly particular about that.  I need something that makes my head tilt back a bit to open up the air passages, and this does not do that.  The cooling starts off nice but by the time I woke up, where my head was, was warm to my head's feeling, but a little to the left or right, nice and cool again.  Anyways, we'll see how it goes.

On to Food!

A couple of weeks with a Roku

I already have an Apple TV and we use it from time to time (Netflix, Youtube, etc), but the thing that is lacking there that we pay for and want to use is Amazon Prime Instant.  We pay for prime, but really haven't used the streaming because I then have to dedicate one of the devices to stream the data (iPad, iPhone etc) which to me is ok, but not an end solution.  I've wanted something to do Amazon Streaming for a while since I noticed that they had some items (I believe it was The Goonies that really lead me start to think about this) that Netflix doesn't have rights to do.  I'm already paying for it (for the shipping) so why not try to use it more.

A bit ago, Woot had refurbished Roku 3s (newest model) on sale, so I ordered one.  I know it has Amazon Prime Instant, plus a whole massive amount of other providers and doesn't have the same sort of restrictions that Apple TV has.  So it should be good to be able to get a couple more thing to display on the TV so we can watch together (rather than me pausing the TV and telling my wife that she should watch this over on the much smaller computer screen).

So lets state what I don't particularly like about the Apple TV.  The main thing is that they sign a content deal with somebody and I get a new icon on the screen from another place I don't care about.  I don't need items I'm never going to use on my screen.  Disney? Sports related things? Korean TV?  They take up several (9 I think) icons that take up real estate and make browsing around more difficult.  But really, that's about it.  The interface is intuitive and consistent across the apps that I use.  I use the same button to fast forward across all items.  Simple, minimal handy.  The only thing I could do better here is to get a keyboard of something to allow for better typing for search.

On the other side here, the Roku interface allows more freedom, and with that freedom it allows for inconsistency.  We were watching Betas on Amazon, swapped to watch the news, then Shannon went to bed and I watched an episode or two of TableTop on YouTube (on the Roku).  On the Amazon interface the right arrow button skips forward an amount of time (30 seconds I think), which is great, but it doesn't play after that, it pauses, which is not so great.  Then I go to try this on YouTube, expecting a similar behavior...but no, it goes to the next item on the playlist.  So then I have to go back, figure out how to fast forward and get back...

So on the one hand, the interface annoys me, but on the other, I can add more things than Apple TV.  I'm expecting updates to Apple TV this year.  I would like to try other things, but once again, I'm out of HDMI ports (even after an expander, for 5 total).

Twitter

So there is an inherent problem with all social media.  The amount of content.

Facebook and Google+ take this into account by using algorithms to guess as to what you want to see, but the issue here (at least on Facebook, where I have the most connections) is that it doesn't show me somethings that I want to see (specifically, postings from my wife which I will look at, often don't show up, or pictures of my Friends/Family's kids).

Twitter and other places don't filter, so sometimes, if I'm busy, I only have a chance to look maybe once a day, so I find myself scrolling through / skimming hours worth of tweets in one dump and this has grown tiresome (maybe it's the number of people I follow).

The problem here is that they have groups that you can look at, but they're not exactly the most user friendly way to do so.  But since that's the option, I'll have to spend some time reorganizing it.

Or maybe that's the point, just look at what's current, and forget the past?

Maybe they'll work for a resolution or start a separate algorithm feed.

We'll see

2013 - Week 34 Cooking

  • BATC (with Butcher Crick Farms tomatoes this time)
  • Sausage, Tomato, pepper and onion pasta
  • (not so) Grilled Lamb Kofte (p19 Cook's Illustrated July & August 2013)
  • Crooked Gap Brats
  • Local Beef Burgers (I'm pretty sure from Coyote Run Farm, it's been in the freezer for a while)

I picked up the first apples for me of the season this year (Summer Treat).  Excited to have them around again.  I'm also having trouble staying inside the 40$ budget.  Basically $40 are the standard supplies I get in a week, a bit of pork, some vegetables, eggs, some goat cheese, and maybe, if I'm lucky, a La Mie Ham and Swiss Croissant.  With the optional things coming up (apples, tomatoes, new things to try (local blueberries)), I'm basically bound by the budget I had to set to cover an unexpected rise in a bill.  It's driving me up the wall a bit.  I had to reduce a bunch of things to pay for this bill.  Some, not so bad (really the big difference between Entertainment and Ultimate on DirecTV was one or two channels I watch occasionally and a bunch of sports channels that I don't care about), others, like reducing the discs from netflix just sort of reflect reality, but the farmer's market thing really hurts.

I also found out that I have a double ear infection (middle ear in both, outer ear in one) .  Got some antibiotics and some drops.  Fun Fun.

A little family reunion

So on Thursday my sister Lovina and her family Flew into Des Moines and we ate a late lunch at Hoq (minus Shannon who had to go back to work) where my brother is working these days.  It was nice to chat about the things in our lives.

Friday Morning Shannon and I headed up to our Hotel in Cresco, Iowa, via a meandering, avoiding highway route through the middle of the state.  Our first stop was in Grundy Center.  We started to play the "Find Premium Gas" game, and ended up filling up at Family Foods, because nobody else in town had Premium.  Then stopped across the street at Park Place for lunch.  The food was ok, their secret sauce was basically thousand island with dill.  The peach pie was pretty good.  Good Crust, and since they were canned peaches (which made me sad), I also thorized, and am probably right, that the secret to their peach iced tea is the peach syrup that comes in the can.  That's pretty much what it tastes like.

Then we moved on.  Driving down roads, through small towns, and generally enjoying the ride.

We saw a sign for a historical marker, and then quickly turned on to the side road to see the marker.  We passed a small cemetery, but saw no indication of a historical marker after that, and after a mild detour, we ended up at The Little Brown Church in the Vale.

Near Nashua, it is a little brown church (clearly an accurate name).  It has models of the church (Littlest, little little, and then the actual church which is just little).  It was a nice place and certainly a good stop to take pictures.  A bit more driving and we were in Cresco and checked in.

We went on to the campground where the rest of my family was staying and proceeded to spend time with the family.

The drive back to the hotel, we went the wrong way, ended up what really seemed like some creepy roads, lost phone signal (no more maps) and stumbled our way back to Cresco on this creepy path not knowing if the road was going to end beyond our headlights and because of the hills, sometimes you just couldn't see anything further.  Eventually data returned to my phone and we got back along gravel roads.

The next morning we went to go get me some decent coffee (the coffee at our hotel was undrinkable).  I was missing my DTFM, and we stumbled upon the Winneshiek Farmers Market and bought some fresh parsley for the meal I had planned for that evening.  We then took a seat at Java John's and I had an ok latte.  Then we waited for the rest of our family to show up to tour the Vesterheim (their website needs some help).  Then some lunch at Mabe's (website also needs help) and the Whippy Dip (suggestions of Josh and Lindsay).

This is where Shannon and I parted ways with my family.  I was on call and needed to be relatively close to a way to deal with a work issue if they arose.  So instead we decided to go to see the Chapel of St Anthony of Padua near Festina, Iowa.

This is a tiny little church that a mother built for her son on his return from the Russian Campaign of Napoleon.  It has a tiny cemetery and a little park right right by it, which is also right next to a river.  We were joined by a couple riding on a pair of ATVs who hung out at the park.

Nice stained glass, a small altar and 2 rows of benches.  It seems like it'll seat 8 or so.   Then we decided that our time was growing short and we'd need to meet up with the family so we headed back to Decorah, stopped by Toppling Goliath's tasting room and I sampled a few varieties and settled on PsuedoSue Pale Ale and picked up a growler and a chalice to drink it out of.

We headed back to our hotel, dropped off a few things for the day, and headed back to the campground where we (well me) were responsible for dinner.  I recruited people to help me assemble hobo packs.  Of course these were hobo packs as I would make them, so they were:

  • A health dot of oil
  • Crooked Gap Green Onion Sausage or Graziano Sausage
  • Sliced Potatoes
  • Fresh Parsley from the Farmer's Market
  • Some Salt, Pepper (or smoked black pepper) and oregano

I sent Issac off to prepare the corn on the cob using the Parmigiano Reggiano and Smoked Black Pepper butter.  Cara prepared a salad (which I never got to taste, cause by the time I was done cooking it was gone).  Emily and Brent help prepare the fires for cooking and we monitored the doneness as we did so.

They turned out pretty good.  I was generally happy with the results.

More chatting with the siblings relatively late into the night, we head back.  This night, we had another experience, we went the right way but saw a family of racoons (mom and 4 or 5 young), a kitten, a possum and what appeared to be a bobcat (or other small wild cat, but clearly not a domestic cat) lounging in the road.

I did something to make me feel better.  I drank some of the PsuedoSue, listened to podcasts and updated my spreadsheet of money, while Shannon went to bed.  After a bit I ended up in bed sleeping.

Sunday morning, the majority of my family headed off to Church and we met up with Joseph, Lovina, and her husband Eric at Magpie's Coffeehouse for breakfast.  We were first again, but I got to enjoy my first latte, which was made from Kickapoo Coffee.  This made me so happy and I was able to create a connection to home and routine by the mere process of drinking this helped relax me.  A bit later they showed up (we thought it would be Lovina, Eric and their kids, but were surprised by the addition of Joseph and subtraction of the kids).  We chatted, ate and had a good morning.  We figured out where to get potatoes for mashing for Joseph's lunch (brisket).  Lovina, Shannon and I headed down to see the Bily Clocks.

We got there a bit early and drove around to find the spillway or the mill, which apparently had been recently knocked down because it was no longer safe to be up (thanks for the info nice lady on her walk).  So we headed over to St Wenceslaus Church (oldest Czech Catholic in the US) and wandered around, headed inside, saw the old pipe organ that Antonin Dvorak played the time he spent there.  We wandered around the old cemetery, where we found many metal crosses (which we later found were done because there was someone there that worked in that method).  Then when the museum opened up we headed over and went in to tour around.

We listened to their walkthrough on the clocks, which I've gotta say are pretty amazing.  Lovina had quite the look of fascination on her face looking at them.  I really wish we could've taken photographs.

We then ran back to share lunch (with a quick stop again at Toppling Goliath to pick up chalices for Josh and Nathan) and then back to the campground.

We took, yet another way there, and drove by the Laura Ingalls Wilders Museum and headed into the road where we were stunned by a road closed sign.  We decided to risk it, and headed towards the path where we should go, eventually running into what closed the road.  A bridge...being rebuilt, not exactly the easiest thing to get around.  So we turned around, and drove down a gravel road.  After a  bit of a detour, seeing a bald eagle getting attacked by a little bird (while it was chasing other birds in that flock), almost going off the road because I was watching the eagle, we ended up back on the other side of the bridge and cruising back to the campground.

We had a good lunch (Brisket over Mashed Potatoes) and took some pictures, then after a bit of chatting we headed home.

This started the "Find Premium Gas" game again, We stopped by Klunders  (decent pie) and then basically chose our route based on where we could fill up my car.  We ended up in Waverly, and then took Highway 20 over to I35 and home.

The road home was long and boring, I really enjoyed the drive on the small highways, this way, my speed kept creeping up.

Nose issues

So this all started, probably, with me coming down with a cold.  I felt pretty bad on Sunday night, so much so, that I went to bed around 7:30 PM and slept, with a half hour break around 2:AM for the next 12 hours.  Normally this would probably be a good thing and I admit I felt pretty good after, certainly better then the night before.

So we made it through Christmas eve without any issues, and right before we were going to bed at our friends house, I got my first bloody nose, which was both nostrils, just after midnight.  I took care of it, chocked it up to the amount of time I've spent blowing my nose that day and the cold.

This was followed by my nose opening up from one nostril or the other throughout the day.  The morning we spent with the Mattas and the afternoon that we spent at my parents house.  Occasionally it switched from right to left or left to right nostril.  Around 5:30 PM, my left nostril decided to open up and not drip, but decided I didn't need any of the blood in my skull.  After I couldn't get it to stop, I decided it was time to go to the ER.

So we headed to St Luke's (being in Cedar Rapids), was registered, checked in and went back to the room in a pretty quick manner.  Every one (registation, nurse, PA, and doctor) were very nice, considering that it was the evening of Christmas day.  After several times waiting (it did sound like there was some other stuff happening out there).  So the first treatment was an Oxymetazoline hydrochloride nasal spray.  So I was think that this was going to be the most expensive trip to use Afrin, however I started bleeding again and then the PA used Silver Nitrate to cauterize the left nostril, which led to a bunch of blood coming back out, which gave the PA concern and thought he'd take it to the next level.

The doctor came in, and was preparing to stuff my nose and nasal cavity.  This clearly wasn't going to be pleasant, so he checked out my nose, saw the silver nitrate did actually close up the scrape on one side, and the other closed up itself, so they had me walk around to make sure the would stay closed (I got the floor tour of the ER).  After that, my nose didn't open back up, so I lucked out and was released.

So, thanks to Jenny and Nathan, for accepting that I bled all over their house (cleaned up after myself), Mom and Dad for helping me clean my 2nd time worn shirt and Joseph for driving us to and from the hospital, my Aunt for her expert prodding and Shannon, who I should clearly listen to more often.
