Mosaix Restaurant & Wine Bar

So when Shannon got home from work, she was ready to settle in for the night, since it seemed like nobody had any plans, but I told her that we could go out and see a movie, go to a resturant, or something, and so instead of dressing relaxed she went and put on Jeans and a Sweater.

I have been recommended Mosaix Restaurant & Wine Bar by Chris several times, but this is the first time that I've actually gotten around to going.

Now according to the Des Moines Register Review, Mosaix gets a 4* review and my probably favorite place to go, La Mie, gets a 4.5*. So I was looking forward to having a treat there, needless to say.

When we pulled into the strip mall that it's at, it initally didn't look like it was open, but I quickly realized that it was ambiance lighting. Whcih was nice. Entering the restaurant it looked fairly comfortable, with metal hangings associated with wine or food. It was nice. We walked up to the Hostess, whose area wasn't really clearly defined, and were asked if we had reservations, which we didn't, so we were suggested to sit in the Lounge, while we waited for a table.

We didn't wait for very long, which is good, cause the lounge was very smokey and was starting to bother me. When I usually go to a bar, I'm ok with a little smoke in the air, cause it's a bar, and that's where one should smoke, but the longer that I've been an ex-smoker, the more annoyed I can get with places without good filtration systems.

When we got our table, just on the other side of the wine bar from the lounge, we sat down and looked over the menu. Apprently they have a Chef exchange going on and Chef Luca Giacomel would be doing our meal for the evening, rather then the normal Mosaix fare. So even with that, I was hopeing for goodness.

The menu was very short, and not exactly cheap either. So we inspect the menu. I order a Syrah from france (considering I have a Syrah from California recently bought, I thought I'd try another one). We worked our way over the menu and after some discusssion I went with the four course meal (to share with Shannon) and Shannon ordered Filettino de Maiiale in crosta di pane alle erbe (Pork Filet in an herbal bread crust). My four courses consisted of:

Bianco di Pollo con mela verde e gherigli di noci in emulsione di rucola (Chickenbreast with green apple and chopped walnuts in an arugula emulsion)
Risotto con radicchio e asiago (Risotto with radicchio and Asiago cheese)
Tagliata di Tacchino al melograno culis di aceto balsamico (Slices of turkey breast with coulis of pomegranat and aged balsamic vinegar)
Chocolate Gellato

So while we were waiting for my first course, we figured out why where were sitting wasn't the best place. First, it was a high traffic area. We weren't right next to the kitchen door, but in the path from the kitchen to two-thirds of the resturant. Second, one of the speakers for the music, was right above our heads, so it was a bit loud (we got used to it though and it actually grew to be kinda nice). And Third, and most importantly, whenever someone actually smoked at the wine bar, the smoke wafted across the bar and assullted our table. This grew annoying. Espically when soem wine drunk lady kept talking lound and looks like she was purposefully blowing her smoke across the way.

The first course came (antipasta), Bianco di Pollo con mela verde e gherigli di noci in emulsione di rucola. It was interesting. It was layed out beautifully. With the cooled strips of tender chicken on a bed of greens and the thing slices of apples and walnuts decorating the sides of the plate. The chicken was very good with a slight sauce, which I assume is the Arugula Emulsion. I don't know if I like the Arugula taste...I don't think I've ever had it before, so I'm not sure. But it was odd to say the least. And quite a surprise to my taste buds. Shannon had about the same reaction, although I think it went beyond interesting for her and more into the "I don't need to taste that again". The portion was what you kind of expect in a nicer resturant, smaller, but more punch for the size.

We had plenty of time to talk between the first and second course, which was nice. We were in no hurry, so it let the food settle.

Our waiter delivered the second course (Primi Piatti), Risotto con radicchio e asiago. It was in a light red, deep centered plate, with a piece of cut cabbage? or some other colorful leafy vegetable decorating the dish. After the appetizer, my expectations were for more of a interesting meal, then something that I would love, but with the first taste of the risotto, I was, well, astonished. It was very good. My eyebrows actually came up in surprise. Shannon was taken with it as well, and before we had dessert, she said that it had been the high light of her meal. The rice dish the double cheese sauce was quite the dance across the pallette. I took smaller spoonfuls to make each taste linger and have more of them. It sounds a little silly, but my mouth is salivating now, the morning after, at the thought of having more of it.

Again we had a nice wait for our second course (Secondi Piatti). We talked about things like what to buy people for Christmas and what not.

The Second (main) course came. Again, the presentation was delightfully simple, yet you could tell they took a bit of effot to make it look that way. My turkey breast pieces were layered like a smile with one eye of julienned vegetables and another of cubes of what I thought was zuchini. Shannon's had a single eye of the zuchini but a smile of the herbed pork. It was actually kinda interesting cause the pork had space between the herb bread and itself. So it kinda looks like the bread had the center cut out and the pork layed inside. Certainly interesting.

So the taste. I had a sample of my vegetbales first. The julienned vegetables were good, the zuchini? was ok. But the turkey was shockingly good. Now my mom and Grandma (Dad's Mom, I don't think I remember thanksgiving at my Mom's Parents) are really good cooks, and as far as thanksgiving goes, I always look forward to their turkey, but this just blew every other turkey that I've had away. It was down right amazing. It really stood out. I quickly cut of a slice for shannon and put it on her plate to try. She was really impressed too. I sampled her pork and it was pretty good, but certainly not astounding. I was pretty happy. The cut trinagles of turkey were enjoyed to the utmost.

Shortly aftee we finished we had a short discussion with the waiter about the turkey and we were, reletively quickly, served the gellato dessert. It was in a long dish, with four little scoups of chocolate, seperated by three little triangles of pastery. It was pretty good. The pastery wasn't overly sweetened and went well with the gellato. However, as for the quality fo the gellato, it wasn't quite as good as the gellato that you could get at a place like Chocolaterie Stam. Still quite enjoyable.

Then, the bill. It was about what Chris had warned me (he said about $45 a person) and we got out of there, leaveing a nice tip for attentive service, for a few dollars under $100.

We will return, not only cause the food was good, but because we want to try the "normal" Mosaix fare.

Oh and to all of you that like the fine food, and have time, I suggest going there tonight to get a taste of their chef exchange chef...I think you'll be pleased. They told us when he'd be there, and I think tonight or tomarrow night is his last night.

Pancakes!

Yes, Pancakes, for dinner. Buttermilk. We had a whole bunch of Buttermilk left over from when I made Pumpkin Spice muffins, so it was probably a good thing to do. to use, rather then wait until it expires and then toss it.

So it's easy to make pancakes. Like really easy. It's kinda surprising that they have the mix in boxes...Oh well...

They cooked up nice and Shannon liked 'em. I think they were good too.

I tried twice to make my skillet pan sized, and the first try was kind of a failure, but the second try it fliped over nicely.

Mmmmm...pancakes.

Lots of leftover...Maybe I'll make 'em for breakfast...

There's something wrong...

There is something wrong with hearing about someone's body being bootylicious on the overhead radio when a dentist is drilling in your mouth...

Yesterday I got the crown measured and a temp crown placed and two cavitys filled. I've been putting this off for a long time...so long in fact I had to have the Dentist redo the estimate to my insurance. So it went pretty well...I was only staring on the ceiling for 30 minutes or so. So not to bad.

I headed back into work and proceded to watch our internal webserver get beaten beyond recognition. I watched the server run for most of the day, paying attention to the statistics and helping Brandon where I could. He did a lot of work at adjusting querys and code as to hopefully shave off a few miliseconds of load time here and there from each page load.

Near the end of the day, I copied the log file and ran some stats on it. And if the rest of the 20 day period that this site s open, goes like the first day, then it would be well on it's way to being our 2nd most hit site (dwarfed by the intranet traffic, but still more then any of our external sites).

Other then about the first hour or so (7:30-9) today, it seems like things have chilled out quite a bit which is good...

Beggar's Night (and the rest of the day)

So Shannon and I cleaned up after she had finished excersizing. It actually went pretty quick. Not to many spills (except for in the kitchen) and the Dining room had been kinda halfway swept up during the night, since Will had spilled some chex mix and then cleaned up after himself. It actually went pretty quick. We decided after we were all cleaned up, that we'd go to La Mie for brunch. While Shannon was cleaning herself up, I finished off the last Pumpkin Spice muffin I made (which went over well at my work, Shannon's work, and the party).

So we went and we waited for a table...eventually we sat down.

I had orange juice and Quiche Lorraine with what was like a potato pancake, except more dense. I don't think the waitress told us what it was. Shannon had the French toast with the potato dish as a side.

I was impressed, with this new taste experience. I had never really had Quiche before...I have had little Quiches I suppose like mini ones, but certainly never a full size one. It was good, as I expected. The dense potato thing was really quite nice and was dense and mixed with sour cream and some spices and had a little sour cream drizzled over the top of it. I just don't really know what to compare it to though, since I didn't really have something else in mind. It was yummy though. The crust was dense but still very flaky, and the rest of it was very light and fluffy. Certainly a lot lighter then scrambled eggs (even when you mix 'em with more milk then you should). Deffinately makes me want to learn how to, or at least make attmepts at making a Quiche. And one thing I like about La Mie, that other places sometimes fail at, is that I have no desire to add spices to what I eat there. Not even salt and pepper. Which is kind of a pet peeve of mine. A lot of people will add salt and/or pepper to a meal without even tasting it. How do you know if it needs it, if you haven't tasted it yet? Taste it, then add spices as you see fit. I also had a cranberry-walnut salad that was quite good. Very fresh mix of greens. As always, the presentation is always great.

I tried the fruit that was decorating Shannon's French toast and it was very good. Cooked and all that. Apples (mmm...) and Rasberrys (mmmm....even though I did get a seed stuck between my teeth). I always don't like leaving that place :-(

We paid are bill (which was quite reasonable) and headed to Target. I needed to buy some electric razor cleaning fluid (since my "change me" light has been blinking for a couple of weeks now) and Shannon wanted to look at some new comforters, since the one I have, is...well...its just too warm for Fall/Spring. It's more of a dead of winter thing. So we looked and didn't really find anything. We looked at toys and some Christmas stuff (yes I know this is surprising considering my rule that NOTHING christmas related can happen before Thanksgiving). And talked about our Christmas lists...at least our theorhetical lists. We talked about going to Bed Bath and Beyond, for a better comforter selection, but by the time we checked out, we didn't have enough time.

We headed home and stopped there for about 20 minutes and then headed to the Drake campus to go to the Fall Concert for the Des Moines Community Orchestra to see Holly play. It was a good experience, and probably the best that I've seen them play as a whole. I really liked The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture by Otto Nicolai and selections from the rest of the program. It was a nice time.

Afterwards, we headed home, with a little time to spare before Beggar's Night.

We had boatloads of candy (we had it for the party too) and I would rather have too much candy then not enough. But apprently it didn't much matter, and we had about the same amount of kids that I saw last year (20 or so). What I found funny was that even though I told the kids to take as much as they wanted, only 2 or 3 actually took handfulls, most just took one to three pieces. It's kinda sad. And we had lots of candy left.

It still is silly. Yes parents should walk with thier kids, but there's gotta be a little more trust here. I still long for the days where there's just tons of people out there...Oh well...

We Started watching Ghostbusters during the alloted time for Beggar's Night. and shortly after it started I started passing between awake and napping.

Eventually we headed upstairs to go to bed and my I talked to my parents for a while and then we hit the sack.

So We'll be heading to Cedar Rapids on Sunday to see my youngest sister (and her kid), since she'll be in town and I've not seen my new niece yet, I don't think...

Today...as to the candy we had left, I loaded it up in a big plastic shopping bag (it was about 2/3rds of all the candy and about 2/3rd full). I checked the break room at around 2:PM (I dropped it off at around 9:AM) and it was almost all gone. And I mean like maybe 15 pieces of candy left. It was quite amazing.

Long, busy day

So yesterday morning, we had originally planned to wake up all early and getin in line at the Civic Center and get tickets for The Lion King touring musical. But since we'd have to get up so early, we decided to just wait and buy them online. But Shannon stirred at around 5:AM, to go to the bathroom, so that woke me up and I didn't think I could fall back asleep, so I decided to let the again sleeping Shannon sleep :)

So I took my time, figuring that this wasn't that big of a deal, and eventually got down there at around 6:15 (skipping breakfast cause I wasn't very hungry) By the time I got in line, there was about 200 or so people in front of me. I found that quite amazing. So the line was snaked around in front of the Civic Center. It looked like it would be a long wait, but they had radio playing from the radio stations covering the event. This actually got annoying, because 1. Not normally radio stations that I listen too, and 2. Since there were 3 radio stations there, they were all playing musc and at one point for a while I was in the wrong place cause I could hear all 3 blending and mixing together and it was just making my brain want to explode (its one of my pet peeves to have two plus musics going at the same time where you can hear both OK but neither well).

So the 3 radio stations had teamed together to give out a bunch of prizes (well I guess since they are all owned by the same company it's not really teamed, is it?) and so it made it kind of fun. Initally they didn't mix up the numbers that they had passed out so a bunch of prizes were handed out to the back of the line. They figured this out, or someone complained and then it seemed quite a bit more random after that.

the line started to move, weather it was people going in, or leaving, or just crowding together, I'm not sure. It wasn't dreadfully cold, but being outside in chilly weather, when you are kinda just standing around, still affects you. I eventually passed Adam and Tiff waiting in the next line over from me (behind me). We chatted for a bit, but then the line moved.

So, more prizes were won (not by me of course). And they were handing out things, like cinnamon roles, coffee from Starbucks, animal crackers, Juice, DM Juce (the register's try at capturing the 20/30 something adult market, but because I was bored, I pretty much read it cover to cover). No prizes for me. But apprently cause Adam is the luckiest man alive, he won some things (chocolates and something), The radio station stopped for a while and then the TV station took over and started giving out CBS promo items and the DVD they made of the floods of 1993. Again, no wins for me.

After they were finished I was getting pretty close to the front of the line. In the final stretch, and the door was in sight. I remember that right when I was in the next group to actually go into the Civic Center, I remember hearing a commercial for John Stoddard Cancer Center (Which is part of one of the affiliates of Iowa Health System).

So I finally got in, and took out the piece of paper that they gave us to fill out when we first got in line. This was actually pretty smart. It had a calendar of dates and times and you were to fill out your top 3 preferences for tickets and what area. So you could just turn it over to the ticket agent and they'd run with it. I think it probably sped things up quite a bit. I had decided to go all out and get the best tickets that I could, since Shannon really wants to go to it (from their site: The Premium Ticket Package includes a premium seat location (Rows SC-H), a complimentary souvenir program and the complimentary VIP show merchandise item from Disney's THE LION KING.). So we are in row F pretty much in the exact middle. It should be a very good show.

After getting my ticket, they had promo items of t-shirts or the original cast recording. So I called Home, woke up Shannon, and asked her what she wanted, so after that I got the original cast recording.

So I headed back to my car, and drove towards home. I knew I had a long long day in front of me, so I decided to stop by La Mie and pick up a Mocha and some pastery for breakfast for myself and Shannon. I ended up getting a chocolate stick(?), I think it was called. Which was pretty much fluffy pastery folded over a center of chocolate goodness and covered in powdered sugar. So then I finished my journey home and woke Shannon up again to show her the tickets I had bought and to tell her that a La Mie pastery was waiting for her.

All in all, from door to door, the whole ticket buying thing took about 3 hours.

Being that I had some time, I sat down and started to play some Civilization 4, which had come out the past week, and after checking to make sure the laptop could run it (it could, but barely), I had to buy it. Huge fan since the first game. I have lost many hours to one of their games. They even have a sort of Civilization Anonymous, which kinda jokes about the addiction (Just one more turn!).

After Shannon got up and excersized, I started to straighten up around the house and get things ready for our guests for our party later that evening. After things were getting to the point where I wanted them, I quickly made us some tuna salad (extra mustard with a touch of Tobaco sauce (it would've been More then a touch if it was just for me)) and then I ran off to help Holly move.

I was the first to show up to help, even before Chris (her boyfriend), so while we were waiting for more people to show up I watched some TV while she continued to pack things up. Eventually Dave, Chris, and Jen showed up and we moved all of Holly's things into the truck. We then headed over to Chris and Pat's and dropped of the big screen TV (Jen and I were to late to help in that one, rats!) and said hello to Holly's kitty (big thing that he is) rested for a bit, and then headed to Holly's new place (she lived way out in the sticks, and now lives even futher out in the sticks (of Waukee)). (who knew I was gonna put so many miles on my car today?)

(Short Side note: It's funny to watch George prepare to go from the top of the couch to the open window sill. It looks like he's all prepared to leap for his life and then basically steps from the couch to the window sill.

We moved her stuff from the truck into her new apartment, which has a better, but still to small kitchen. Holy has several large and heavy items. But they were made quick work of and I sat down for a bit to catch my breath and watched segments of the Iowa State game (which they later went on to win 42-14). After a bit, I headed home.

While I was out, Shannon had washed the couch blankets, vacuumed and futher cleaned up around the house. I had a few errends to run, so I picked up a few more things at Dahls (chip dip, salsa, etc), got some money from the atm and deposited a reimbursement check from my California trip, picked up a White Chocolate Mocha from Grounds for Celebration and then picked up dinner from Burger King (not the best food, but certainly quick).

I got home we quickly ate, and I showered to get rid of the sweat from moving and got into costume and then did the final touches around the house, and Shannon placed the kitties downstairs and shut the door (so they had food, water, litter and wouldn't have to worry about the guests). Then we sat down to wait for the people to arrive.

So I told people to show up at 7ish, but our first guests didn't really show up tell around 7:20 or so. Brandon and Val were our first guests of the night, and they were dressed up as drinks, Poison (Black Velvet and Orange Juice) and Grasshopper (green creme de menthe, white creme de cacao, light cream) for another party (held by a co-worker of Brandon and mine). Through the night we had quite a few people show up and lots of people I didn't directly know. Some of Holly's friends were dressed up as a hawkeye football player (the girl) and a a fan or cheerleader (the guy). And they laughed when I told them them that they couldn't come in, and laughed again, when I said, "No, I'm serious, get out of my house". People started leaving to other partys, or events or other places. And sometime during the night a filthy and mean topic wise, game of charades started in the living room.

Over the night I talked about booze, computers, work, finances (house and etc), food, cooking, La Mie, bread, and several other thigns.

At around 1:AM Shannon headed up to bed, and being that I was exausted from waking up at 5:AM I gave the, it's time to go before I have to kick your ass out look, and the last people trickled out. I had been cleaning up things all night, so doing a short once over around the main level of the house, didn't take too long, and I was shortly brushing my teeth and getting into bed at around 2:AM.

So from 5:AM to 2:AM I was pretty much doing stuff all day. But it was a good day, a good party, and I got good tickets.

I guess the only real negatives to the day was that Ben (L Brokowitz (Voss)) couldn't come down cause he had experiments running over the weekend, and Seth and Brianna also didn't show up (Brandon, Shannon and I went out to lunch with them on friday at the Famous Daves).

A few things

We had grilled cheese sandwhiches before we ran of to buy stuff for muffins and some halloween stuff. And Shannon said that her's was perfect. That made me happy.

As a change of pace, I had penut butter and strawberry jam for lunch today (rather then my normal ham and cheese). It is as good as I remember....

I just got back from filling up my gas tank. I don't know why I'm so happy that I'm still paying $2.30 a gallon for gas...but I guess it's better then paying $3+. On my way back I discovered that my car can easily hit 100 MPH in 4th gear (and it has two more gears after that).

:-D

PTO

So based on my current rate of growth, if I do not sell or take any PTO (Paid Time Off), I will be maxed out (480 hours) in my PTO bank in about 3.5 months. Of course, I'm selling PTO, and November/December is always a time to take a bit o' vacation. So...

Long day...of sorts

So this morning I skipped my walk and took Shannon's car in again to try to get the Squeekness fixed. We dropped off her car, I drove her to work and then drove back and dropped of the key to her car.

Then headed to work. So I was there a bit earlier then I normally am. I got there just a little after 7:30, worked all day, and when I was thinking about going home, got a bunch of things that HAD to be done.

After finding out that some things time got away with me and at around 5:50 I had to zip off to pick up the key to Shannon's car and then Shannon. After I dropped Shannon off, I headed back to work, fixed a problem with data structures, packed up and headed home.

I got home after 7:15...making it just a long day.

Other then that, things are going good.

We're ramping up to my 2nd Annual Halloween party. Shannon's invited a few of her co-workers and quite a few other people should be coming. I made up my boozahol list, and was almost surprised by the length. Partys are nice cause sometimes people leave booze behind. but mostly just drink it. But the selection does go up.

We'll see how it goes.

Wednesday

So I woke up again...way way early. So I again played the same game as before, and ended going to the Solvang Restaurant which apprently is famous for their Aebleskivers (Best described as round pancake balls, they are a fun alternative to the traditional pancake breakfast. Served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar (the traditional way) or create your own version, using butter and syrup, topped with apple sauce, or fresh berrys.). So I had a few, and also an egg, some bacon and some danish style pancakes...which is pretty much pancakes that are fairly thin (not super) and folded over into thirds. It was ok, nothing too spectacular. The syrup was served in little sealed single serving containers, rather then being warmed. The Aebleskivers however, were pretty good, certainly worth a try. The jam was warm and yummy and the combination with the powdered sugar, just made for a good experience. And since I saw that it opened at 6:AM, but default it was going to be my meal on the last day too.

Then it was off to more developers conference. I took notes and emailed my group back home. Pretty much like before, some good, some not so good.

So for lunch it was Taco Roco. They picked up a whole little meal for us and we all headed out to Kalyra Winery. I sampled quite a few wines and ended up buying a couple of dessert wines (2004 Kalyra Black Muscat, 20 Year Old Aussie Tawny Port).

The land around this place, wasn't as nice as Bridlewood, but it did have some good wines there, so it was still worth a visit. And they did use this in the movie Sideways. I think it'd be nice to go and visit all the places they hit in the movie.

Taco Roco is actuall pretty good, good and tasty.

And it was back for more class.

We were running behind, and I need to get some time out so I could actually get out and buy Shannon a present. Since I'd usually head in before shops open up and get done after they closed. So I tried to keep things going along quickly.

We moved on and when it got done, bam I was like we gotta go! So I had spotted a shop that I wanted to buy from and headed there. the main present I bought was 30% off and the person there also gave me an additional 10% off (friends price) cause she had just gotten her condo, and cause of the amount that I spent, I got an aditional apple candle for free.

So I headed back to the hotel, chatted with Shannon for a bit, and then headed down to the Chumash Casino. We ate at the buffet. It was apprently seafood night, but that's always a troublesome thing, so I stuck to more standard fare. It was ok, nothing spectacular. The mashed potatoes were more soupy then mashed, which was kinda silly. The cakes and desserts where great either, cake was dry, just nothing really stuck out as amazing.

So we headed down to the casino floor. I plugged a few dollars into a couple of slot machines, and then sat down at a 3 card poker table. After getting the hang of it, I went up and down and ended up losing about $30. The guy next to me (Ben from FL), did pretty well and ended up quite a bit up, one time for a total of 15 bucks he won 120$ So...that's not to bad I guess.

After a bit, we all headed to the Maverick Saloon. Drinks were on medseek, and I quickly found out that they had Jack Daniels Single Barrel. Once on the suggestion of Johnnie Walker Black. It was ok, but I pretty much spent the rest of the night drinking the Single Barrel.

Now this is my third trip to California, but this was first time I had ever saw a star, and to my surprise, I saw two. First I saw, John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek wedding, or etc) and Bo Derek (Yes, THE Bo Derek). It was kidna cool. I got a few pictures (not with me in it). Apprently John Corbett was there to shoot a video for his new album. So they were closing up production (4 days) and they went ahead and played a show. It was actually kinda rock + a little bit of Country. It was pretty good. Which for me is pretty suprising, since of that vein of music, I own almost nothing from it, cause I mostly find country to be obnoxious. I may just have to investigate if I want to buy that album.

After they closed their show, we headed back to the hotel and I quickly packed up a few things, leaving out just the things I needed for the over night (CPAP machine, clothes) and tried to fit the rest into my suitcase. I then went to bed.
