First Lawn Mowing of the season...

So after work on Friday, I took Shannon's long standing advice and finally mowed the lawn. Most of the yard didn't need it, since they're shade covered, but in the area around the driveway and the front yard the grass was getting quite long.

My mower actually struggled over some patches.

Oh well...so starts the yard work.

Next I gotta weed around the flowers, spot treat to hopefully eradicate the dandelions, but leave the clover (which attracts cute little bunnys (which torment the kitties)), and most importantly, Trim the bushes...away from the sidewalk and also put down new rock underneath the bushes...

fun fun...

One more thing....

Oh yeah...

I had a 6 month checkup on blood pressure and general health this past Wednesday...Things are still going good. I asked some questions and all that.

I got the name a number of the sleep doctor that I saw (since I forgot who he was), since I was told to get a follow up appointment...(which I never did).

He kind noticed that in all the tests I did last year, no where in there was a cholesterol screening...so on Wednesday I'll go back and get one.

Some things from the past week...

I have a new niece! My older brother and his wife had a little girl, Her name is Laural Annmarie. Congrats!

So this week and part of last I've had a lot of new music. And I mean A lot. I ordered a bunch of CDs with tax return money (Shannon got something so I got something too).

So here's the list:

Ben Folds - Rockin the Suburbs
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Amen
Brother Ali - Champion
Brother Ali - Shadows On The Sun
Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness
Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Depeche Mode - Exciter
Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel
Fall out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree [Limited "Black Clouds and Underdogs" Edition]
Greig - Piano Music, Vol. 5
Kanye West - Late Registration
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Punchline - 37 Everywhere
Yellowcard - Lights and Sounds
25 Wedding Favorites
Monty Python's Spamalot (Original Cast Recording)
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall [LIVE]

Yeah I went a bit nuts, but right now I'm stuck on Brother Ali and Coheed & Cambria....I've seen Brother Ali at the Vaudville Mews (amazing) and I'll be seeing him in a month or so in Omaha with Atmosphere.

I started walking again, instead of excersizing in the basement (the videos bore me to tears). I changed my path so that there is more up and down hills, instead of the basically flat Franklin Ave. It's been nice.

It was hot yesterday. I think it hit 89 degrees...it's april, it's supposed to be much cooler. I actually seriously considered turning on the air conditioning yesterday... It's in the 80s again today...

My Gramma had a heart attack last week, but has recovered a bit an is back in the nursing home. From the sounds of what my parents say, she is making an effort again, so she can go home (instead of being at the nursing home). I need to get up there and see her (and my new niece).

I made pot roast this past Sunday. It turned out pretty well, I vaguely followed the recipe...more just used it as a general idea. But the beef was tender and very spiced (spicy mustard will do that).

We got chocolate eggs from Choclate Stam...and well so far they've been amazing. Good things for easter.

Speaking of Easter, Brandon mentioned that Val's family was coming for easter, and with all honesty, I asked him, "That's this weekend?". You think maybe I'm out of touch a little?

Yeah that was me being me...

So on saturday one of the things I bought was a little pill dispenser, so it tells me when I've taken my pills for Sunday through Saturday...

So I filled it up Saturday night...

And so what do I do?

I forget to take my pills on Sunday...

Oh well...

New Des Moines Central Library

Des Moines Central Library!
So after spending the mornining, finsihing up a book (1/4th of it), then going to Target, the hardware store, and then Hy-vee. I went downtown to the opening of the new Des Moines Central Library. Shannon was going to come with me, but she was all tired out from work and wanted to nap...and as I have learned, you let sleeping Shannons sleep.

So here is the outside of the library

The outside of the building reflects the copper during the day...the lamps are even cool.

It is also cool how the building reflects on itself (and from other buildings too.

There's a interesting plaza here, where they have quotes from books (I'm guessing) in the handrails.

Balloons!

Yeah...that's right, it's Dance Dance Revolution...I don't know what to say...

The copper mesh is pretty cool, you can see out, but in the night you can see in too...

And there were wonderful pastries from La Mie at their new cafe at the library.

All in all I'm just very happy at the whole expericne of a new library. It's a shining star in the belt of Des Moines. Great spaces, great look just makes me happy to think that it's in my town.

Salad Filling

So in an interest of slimming down, we've added salads as a more regular food item for dinner. So usually a bag of cut salad mixes makes about 3 salads. 1 for each of us for dinner, and one for me for lunch the next day.

I like salad, but I would rather have something more filling...but that's another problem, at least for me, is that I do eat to much and I am used to eating to much, so I need to get myself used to eating less.

Salads usually don't keep me full (which I suppose is a good thing on one hand), but do have a surprising lack of calories (we even select dressings that are lower in calorie counts (more vinigrettes, less things like ranch)).

Oh well...veges are good for me I guess...

Weekend Full...

So we, at much prompting from Shannon, decided that we should clean up all the leaves that I failed to clean up before winter. So we did so.

4 or 5 Hours and 11 bags later, the yard was much much cleaner and ready to be mowed over (of course the ground is far to wet to actually mow).

Afterwards, we ate lunch, Shannon Napped and time passed.

We headed down to eat at the Raccon River Brew Pub downtown, to investigate the possibility of having the rehersal dinner there (Shannon said it's ok, So I need to call them now). I like their food, it's good and pretty, without being too expensive.

We were panning on going to V for Vendetta, but got a call during dinner from Josh and he wanted to go bowling...since Shannon didn't so much want to see the movie, it was an easy sell.

So we went home, watched a movie and then headed out to the bowling alley.

Apprently EXTREME bowling doesn't start until 12:30, instead of 11, so We (Josh, Lindsay, Lindsay's sister and her friends) headed to Josh's and watched March of the Penguins. When the movie was almost done, Josh et all headed off and we finished watching the movie and when home to go to bed.

The next morning we headed out to Jordan Creek for Shannon's makeup appointment (for the wedding). So I wandered around the mall, drooled over some stuff at the apple store (no buying anything until new version comes out or ipod dies (whichever comes first)). Looked at some stuff at Williams Sonoma. I ended up buying a card game book (rules on hearts and etc) and Risk GodStorm (on the Vossinator's Suggestion).

After Shannon was done, we headed over to the surrounding stores and she went to Old Navy (for shorts and shirts for summer) and I went to Bed Bath and Beyond. I drooled over a stainless steel wok and grill pan from
Calphalon. I ended up getting a can opener to replace the one we have (this one not being an electric one, cause it saves counter space).

Then we headed to Target! I bought some shorts and a pair of swim trunks and shannon got some more makeup stuff and some shorts.

All said, we spent quite a chunk of money....but it's all good, preparing for summer and all that.

Watery Lights

So yesterday morning, Shannon comes down, tells me the toilet's clogged and that she has to go to work. I think no big deal, we live in an old house, it happens from time to time. I have no idea how old or new the pipes in our house are, so it's to be expected.

After getting up to working on it, and working at it for a while, I decide that our plunger isn't effective, since it's rubber part doesn't form completely around the drain of the toilet. So I decide to leave it and stop by on my way home from work and pick up a diffrent plunger.

So I get a call around 12:30 from home. Shannon had decided that she wanted to work on the problem, even though I did say that I would take care of it. Apprently the toilet had overflowed and she had cleaned up the bathroom, but it was still clogged. She said that she needs to go back to work, but she's worried about the leak from the cieling in the lower hallway...

Wait a sec, the lower hallway?

I tell her to go to work and I'll come home and take care of it, since my work hours are far more flexable then hers are. Shannon was obviously upset.

I drive hom relatively quickly, and she's still there when I get home, she had called work and said she was gonna be a little late.

I check up stairs. The carpet is a bit wet near the line between the tile in the bathroom and the bathroom had obviously been cleaned up (of water). Even though the toilet was clogged, it was not still putting water out, so it's not a huge deal.

So i go to look at the hall on the main level, and look up...the light looked a little funny...a little odd...Is the light fixture full of water? Holy crap it is...

This is a light fixture that is about 10 inches in diameter and about 4 inches deep. That's a lot of water...

So I send shannon upstairs to get my power drill/screwdriver and I go downstairs to turn off the power to the house (which I've never done before). It was pretty easy, just press of the master breaker (not a switch, doesn't really look like buttons, but they are) and a few tests of lights around the house and appliances to see that yes, all the power to the house was disabled.

Not wanting to have the chance of the water spilling on me, I strip down to my boxers and t-shirt (I planed to do work clothes laundry that night).

I got up on a chair and carefully removed the glass cover from the light fixture and with Shannon's help, get it down withou spilling any water.

Strangely enough, the rest of the light fixture was relatively dry...so it looks like it just came down the holes in the metal part of the fixture.

Anyways, I removed the lightbulbs and tossed them (one was burned out anyways) and taped the light switch off and turned the power back on.

Brandon says that I should take the actual fixture down from the ceiling to double check it, and plan to do so this weekend.

I guess this is first major problem, but it really isn't tha big of a deal, it doesn't look like a lot of damage was caused. And after all, about a year or two ago, I caused a huge water spill in the same bathroom with a leaky pipe (fresh water)...so...(as is still evidenced by the peeling paint in the kitchen.

Anyways...Shannon headed to work, and after I was satisfied that things were ok on the home front, I did the same.

On the way home I stopped by the hardware store, and picked up a new plunger...and had about as much success as the old one...

So I headed back to the hardware store and get a narrower plunger (to get futher down) and a toilet snake.

Between the two of those, Success!

Flushing happens!

So with that, the problem is solved...

Time Confusion

So last night at around 3:30, I woke up and took off my mask and decided it was pretty close to time to wake up so I'd just lay there and wait for the alarm to go off.

George (the kitty) noticed my movement, and came up to get attention, which in turn annoyed Shannon and caused her to wake up.

So I asked her what time it was (since I didn't want to put on my glasses), and she told me it was 3:35...

So I went back to bed.

Funny how time gets confusing when you don't have any point of reference that you can see...
