Another busy week

So on Sunday we headed over to the east side to Courtie's Graduation party. It was a good time...even though, intiially, we were confused, since we didn't recognize anyone at first, but then saw Courtie's mom and continued from there. The food they had was pretty good (cavatelli). It was a good time. Even though Jen already said it, we did get to see Courtney nekked...well a picture, when she was a youngester, playing in the mud....naked... A bit later we headed even futher east to Jerry and Renee's Baby shower at Renee's sister's. We arrived a bit late, since the time of both the partys overlapped. But in hanging out there, when we got up to go, I couldn't find one of my shoes. Apprently one of the children had carried it off into the kitchen. Afterwards we headed home for the day.

Wednesday we had movie night at Chris and Pat's. We watched Guess Who's coming to Dinner. It was pretty good. Great charecters and a topic that could still be consider sensative today (though much less so). They certainly played it off pretty well though. Is a well educated, important, sensative person, even though they are of a diffrent race, ok to marry your child? Or on the opposite side, someone who's well bred and rich good for you child? It was a good movie, and a good way to spend the evening.

I've started to help Shannon study for her upcoming exam (in June). I really think that she is an auditory learner.

Thursday night, I made a Jerk chicken marinade (out of a recent Bon Appetit. I had to modify the recipe a little since they didn't have any habenero peppers at the store...actually both stores I went to, I ended up using jalapeno peppers. I left the chicken to marinade over night....it was very green.

So I put the chicken into the oven about an hour before my Parents, oldest sister Cara, and youngest brother Isaac got here. This was, I think, the last of my siblings that Shannon needed to meet.

So I also made my first risotto too. I couldn't find the rice that was suggested to use and only one kind of medium grain rice. I made it to match with the chicken, and it turned out very well...I used olive oil, a white onion, green onions a coupel of jalapeno peppers (all choped up), the rice, some white wine, heated up chicken broth (store bought) (a lot more then I thought would be in there), and then finally some spices (ginger, basil, and crushed red pepper) and quite a bit of parmesan cheese.

I gotta say that I was really happy how both things turned out. In what I read about risotto is that it is easy to mess up, having it go to long, stiring to much, or to little, to hot or to cold...so I was happy with the taste and the consistancy.

The jerk chicken was good too. It was at about the limits of Shannon (and also Cara's) spiciness. But it was so good. Spicy...the mixture of spices (a lot more then I thought would be in there) along with the heat from the peppers.

The food got good reviews all around the table, and everything (even the two baggetts) was devoured (no leftovers). Joseph did miss out, but we sent him some of the suace I made from the jerk merinade.

We all headed down to Stam for some Gellato and afterwards they left and we headed home.

It turned out pretty good :)

A week in review...

So work kept me busy, preventing me to update as I would've liked.

Tuesday night, we went with Chris, Holly, Jerry, Renee, Dave, Pat, uh...pat's friend?, Dusty and Jen to Taki. I've been there before and ejoyed the food, but this was the first time, for me and for Shannon to have the sort of show that goes along with sitting arround heating area. It was kind of neat. Although on other tables, they got a huge burst of flame, that our cook apprently either forgot to do, or just didn't do...The food was good, the show was fun, the conversation was lively and we found an alcohol that Shannon didn't hate...(plum wine).

Wednesday night I had server maintainance where Brandon and I moved our intranets from our server that is around 5 years old, to our nice new server, that will eventually be load balanced. It went a bit longer then we thought and we were there until 2:30 AM

Thursday...that involved a lot of sleeping after work.

Friday, after I took the day off, we went to Wok in Motion with Josh and Lindsay. Josh made claims that the sushi was better then what they had at the Waterfront. We split a bottle of Sake (which was a bit too fruity tasting for our tastes). The sushi was pretty good, and I think was equal in taste to the Waterfront, but the presentation wasn't as nice. Yesterday, Josh pointed out that he thought the Avacado was better at Wok In Motion. Shannon had a stir fry dish (chicken and noodles) and it was very good too, and it wasn't that expensive either (espically if you were to stick with the stir fry dishes.

Saturday, We met up over at Chris's and carpooled up to Sioux City in Chris's car (we were gonna drive seperately and caravan, but since Dave's car was in the shop...the incentive was gone). We got up there a bit early and Chris gave us a tour of his hometown (I think). It was interesting. We eventually headed to the Senior Recital.

Drew did a great job. He even played on the harpsichord that he helped build. He looked a little stressed on stage, but when it was done, you could tell that he was truly relieved.

Afterwards, was a little reception and after that, a dinner at the Marina Inn, across the riiver. The inside was pretty nice and the dinner was good (Shannon didn't much like the Salmon, but I thought it was OK). It was fun to eat dinner with Jen, Dusty, Chris, Dave, Josh and Lindsay. Drew got some cool presents (a really nice looking music stand among them), since this was his sort of graduation party too (since he's going to Japan right after he graduates).

Afterwards we drove back the scenic route...though how scenic it was through the rain and the fog...but I suspect it was much more fun to drive then the interstate.

Today...Today we have Courtney's graduation party and Jerry and Renee's Baby Shower....so busy weekend...

Fun with work.

Wednesday:
8:15 AM to 5:30 PM - 4 interviews (other stuff too)
8:45 PM to 2:30 AM - Moving our intranet from the old server to the new one (orginally scheuled from 9-midnight)

Got home at 2:45 didn't get to sleep until 3:30

alarm goes off at 6:AM, decided to nap after show, pager goes off at 7:AM, eat breakfast

7:30 to 4:30 a day full of trouble shooting and obnoxiousness.

I'm tired...I got home and took a nap for 2 hours....

Punchline! (It's Chris's Birthday)

I went left work headed home and ate some fried egg and dubliner cheese sandwhiches, watched the Sopranos and then headed downtown.

I got down to The House of Bricks and met up with Brandon.

So here's the line up:

New Atlantic
Cute is What We Aim For
Punchline

Cute is What we Aim For was goodish...made me get up from the bar and actually watch, instead of just listening form the bar. Maybe it was cause the lead singer was sick...or maybe cause he wouldn't stop talking during their set...Maybe I'll listen to their music somewhere's or another.

This was probably the best I've seen Punchline perform. I was pretty happy with the set list they played and how well they played them. Apprently it was Chris's birthday and there was a lot of sillyness surrounding it.

I felt really old. I think their fans are getting younger....

It's really to bad, the poor turn out to the show, a lot of people missed out on a great show.

After the show, I thought about hanging out and having a bear with Punchline, since Chris remembered Brandon (although he said he didn't recognize him at first, cause of the beard), but I decided I'd rather go home and see Shannon...

Prairie Meadows and cleaning and etc.

So after Shannon got home from work, we ran a few errends and then headed out to Prairie Meadows.

We met up with Dave, Chris and Holly, Chris's mom, Holly's Sister Sarah.

We ate at Champion's in the horse racetrack/casino. And the food was...well...it wasn't good...it wasn't terrible either...but yeah...

So when it came time for the first race, we placed some bets, and headed down towards the race track.

It was kind of interesting. Lots of people there and lots of bets being placed. There was quite a range of people there, although most of the people there were of betting age (I don't understand why someone would bring their kids there, but that's just me). So slowly I learned about how it works to some extent. We made no scientific approach to our bets, and just based it on the name.

The first race started and ended right in front of us (the later races started further down the track and finished in front of us). And it was kind of exciting. And the finish was pretty cool.

Horses are beautiful animals and these are well cared for.

I saw one of my coworkers from the HR from Iowa Health Des Moines.

Then the waiting started, If you are not really figuring out what you want to bet on, then the wait between the races is quite long.

I asked a few questions about how things worked of the people, who seemed to know what they were doing, around me. And it was interesting.

We watched a few more races and eventually it got cold, so we headed inside.

We played a few games. Apprently Blackjack is Holly's game. So we sat down at a table and played a few hands. I lost a few dollars, Shannon won a few, so as far as it went, for what I lost, she won so we broke even.

We took a break from BlackJack, Played a few slot machines (we both ended up losing, but Shannon was up 2 dollars on a nickel slot), and headed back to the blackjack table to see what the group was up too.

There was an old guy at the table, and I saw him pull out the second 100$ bill of the night and get it changed for 5$ chips...

Eventually we decided to go, and out in front Holly, Chris, Shannon and I decided to go see a movie. We met up over at Chris and Pat's and ended up going to Thank You for Smoking. Which was pretty funny.

So it was pretty late, so after heading back to Chris's to pick up my car, we headed home to sleep.

Sunday....oh Sunday...I mowed, we cleaned, I put new hubcaps on Shannon's car....by the end of the time, we both were pretty tired.

Cholesterol Screening Results

So It wasn't as bad as I was suspecting...but lets just go through it here.

For my Total Blood Cholesterol Level I was just a little above the line, so no real worries there.

For my LDL level I fell in the Near Optimal/ Above Optimal range according to the American Heart Association.

So here's where the bad stuff comes in...

My HDL's are too low...So when I heard that, I asked if that meant that I needed to eat more rich, fatty foods, like I like so much, she laughed and said no. She did say that weight loss, excersize and Omega 3 Fatty Acids would be good, either by supplement or by fish (so Josh, this is where you give me a recommendatation).

The other bad news is that my triglyceride level is in the "High" category....

But here's the thing, It's all good. The doc's not so worried so no more pills for me, at least for now. But we are gonna keep an eye on it.

So that's the story...

French Onion Soup....oh yeah and the Zoo.

So Saturday morning, we headed over to Chris and Pat's to meet the group to head to Omaha to go to the Zoo. On our way there I picked up a Mocha and a Cheddar and roasted red pepper dashish from La Mie. I gotta say that it was really good. I love that place :)

So we drove west to Chris and Pat's. We were the first to arrive at the meeting point, but were eventually joined by Holly, Jerry and Renee, and then Madd, Dusty and Jen.

We headed out (a bit later then my suggested start time), and due to some confusion got mixed up as to where we were meeting up next but got on the road all the same. Jerry, Renee and Shannon and I were all in Jerry's car and Madd, Dusty and Jen were in Jen's car. Chris and Holly were in Holly's car.

The car ride was nice, Jerry, Renee Shannon and I talked about various topics and it made the trip go a lot faster. We stopped in Council Bluffs and hit a Subway (of the availble restaurants in the area, this seemed to be the only option) for lunch.

Then we took the last part of the road trip and then arrived at the zoo. Parking was scarce, but we eventually found a spot and headed towards the entrance.

We headed around the zoo, which was quite big. The Desert Biome was pretty cool, lots of diffrent anmials and versions of deserts, although I expect, the desert is far more vast and sparse. We headed down to the big cat's exhibit...I gotta say that I like the big cat's exhibit in the Kansas City zoo better. It seemed more natural and less "hey look at the big tigers over there" although it did make it easier to actually see the cats...

We headed around to the Orangutan forest and then the Gorilla Valley. In there we saw a young gorilla playing with a couple of children through the window. Running back and forth with the children. It was quite cute. On the other side of the habitat, there was also a baby Gorilla that was very cute.

It was very windy outside. It was threatening all day, but it was pretty much just windy.

We went and took pictures of bears, and headed around. We were going to take a train ride and get a quick tour of the big animals, but we missed the last train ride...So we walked it and took a quick tour, becuase the thunder was starting to become frequent. We skipped the penguins (something that Jerry wanted to see) and the aquarium and headed up to the Jungle.

The Jungle was pretty cool. Humid in there, waterfalls and lots of animals mixing together. It was built to look like you were on a jungle path...and it kept to that through the entire exhibt. We even went to the lower level where it actually seemed like you were walking in the Jungle.

We came out, and it started to rain a little, but just a very light rain...so we headed out.

We headed north to the Old Market and went to a place called the French Cafe.

Front, as we were leaving:

Above our table:

It was fairly fancy and I was not only surprised that we were seated (we were all wearing shorts), but that we were seated right away...Of course after a while it seemd like we were seated in a private dining area (away from the other people), which was fine as far as I was concerned.

We were seated at two tables, with Jerry, Renee, Holly and Chris at one table, and Shannon, myself, Dusty, Jen and Madd at the other.

Shannon ordered a Tequila Sunrise, and I ordered a glass of the Hans Fahden Cabernet Sauvignon. It was really good. I'm gonna have to get me a bottle....or two...or three...

We ordered baked brie for an appitizer, but it wasn't just baked brie it was "Baked Brie en croute with a fig compote". Several people ordered their french onion soup.

The Baked brie was very good...Served with figs and a some greens as a garnish. very pretty.

-- Please Note: While writing this George the Kitty is running around the house like he's possessed ---

-- Please Note: Gracie the Kitty apprently is also possessed ---

But here's where the amazing comes in. Dusty gave me a sample of his French Onion Soup.

Wow.

That's what I have to say. It was oniony, but not so strong that it was over powering, and a strong black peppercorn taste. It was so good. I would be willing to drive all the way to Omaha just to get that soup. It was just amazing. Holly was getting full and wanted to save room for dinner so she let me finish it. Happy belly.

Next up came some salads. It was an interesting mixs of greens, including several things I didn't recognize, but very good.

Then dinner.

I had le canard laque aux riz sauvages (plum honey glazed duck breast, duck leg confit, wild rice pilaf, balsamic reduction) and Shannon had la queue de homard tempura (tempura fried lobster tail, sweet and sour lobster sauce, citrus cous cous).

I'm am growing into a big fan of duck...The duck and it's sauce was a delight...(and here is where I'm going to not try to remember, cause I didn't take notes (Like I do sometimes) and it's the day after (not the night of), so it's not as clear in my mind). I was very happy with the duck and the pilaf. Shannon's lobster was very good too. It was great.

Shannon's Dinner:

My Dinner:

The desserts. Shannon had a Chocolate volcano Cake, which had a warm chocolate suace in the middle. It was very good. Verry good. I had a creme brule, and so did Jen (she was very happy with it). It's so relatively simple yet so good.

Shannon's Dessert:

My dessert:

After dinner we chatted for a while.

And here's the test...Did I feel cheated when the bill came? Absolutly not...And it wasn't cheap either (the most I've ever paid for two people). I would love to go back. I also want to try the other places too.

Walking back to the parking garage, there were a group of religious fanatics using their children to pass out pamphlets. I really wanted to tell the child that gave me a pamphlet to tell their parents to stop using them to promote their religous beliefs. I know why they do it. It's hard to say no to a child, who gives you something. It seems awfully devious to me to do that.

The party broke up and Jerry, Renee, Chris, Holly, Shannon and I, headed towards the hotel and Shannon, Dusty and Madd headed back to Des Moines.

After checking in, we went to Dave and Buster's. Which is kinda like a chucky cheese for Adults....a bar, video games, games to earn tickets...It was kinda of tricky too, because unlike chucky cheese, where everything costs a token, these had credits with cards you fill up and they used a diffrent amount of credits per game. So 2.1 or 5.2 or 6 or 10 or whatnot...I won one ticket jackpot (320 something tickets) and several other tickets. It was OK, but when your not winning 'em for a kid for their prizes, it's just not as fun. Shannon ended up with a little bear and a little rainbow colored unicorn.

After a bit, We headed out. Chris and Holly headed back to Des Moines and the rest of us back to the hotel.

We had planned to go back to the old Market in the morning, and we did...but pretty much everything was closed (because of easter). Their were a few resturants open, and a Leather and Wool shop...which turned out to be good, since Shannon had pack light, and didn't bring something to wear if it got cold, so we bought her a nice pull over in the store so she wouldn't be chilly.

After stopping at a coffee house, we headed home.

It was a nice weekend.

We'll deffinately have to go back to the old market sometime when things are open.
