My Kidneys hurt

So a couple of weeks ago, I switched over from Cozaar (100mg) to Benicar (20 then 40 mg). The Cozaar was loosing it's effectiveness...

Initially I was impressed with the results, with my blood pressure going down to recorded levels like I've never seen (one time it was bordering on the low edge of normal, that day one of my co-workers actually went home to get her BP monitor so she could take my BP cause I felt like crap). Especially after an ALT (SGPT) blood test showed my level was higher then normal (65, normal range is 0-40) (This is a test to check liver damage). After these results came in, I had more blood drawn and had a ultrasound of my liver, kidneys and pancreas. My liver is apparently fatty...

My HDL (good Cholesterol) is lower then it it should be too, but that's not near as severe.

So over the last couple of days minor back pain has really turned into localized pain in the areas of my kidneys...so...I'm calling the doc tomorrow.

Bonefish Grill

So after not really going out by ourselves in a long while, we decided to go out on a date last night. We decided to head over to the Bonefish Grill.

So we started off with the Saucy Shrimp ("Sautéed in a Lime Tomato Garlic sauce with Kalamata olives and Feta cheese.", which was quite good. The combination of the flavors of the feta, olives, lime and shrimp was really quite nice. The presentation was also very nice to. I had thought about bringing my camera to the restaurant, but I ended up not doing so. Our waitress also brought us over some fresh bread. The bread was...well...bread. It was warm and probably straight out of a heater or maybe even the oven, but it was just a fairly bland bread, certainly not of the quality I've grown used to. It did have a nice crust ans was good for dipping into the sauce of the shrimp (the oil they gave us for dipping was fairly bland).

Then we moved on to our salads. The house salad ("Crisp chopped greens, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, heart of palm and pine nuts. Tossed with citrus herb vinaigrette."), was ok, but nothing too special. The "greens" were basically iceberg lettuce that was dressed up with the other ingredients. This was, however, my first experience with a heart of palm (which was good).

Next up I had some of their Corn Chowder with Lump Crab. This was...missing something. Itself it had a nice taste to it, but it needed something, like to be simmered with pepper, to give it an extra taste and complexity.

Then we had our main courses. I had Ahi Tuna with Pan Asian sauce (A teriyaki glaze, with a bed of sautéed spinach, and a drizzle of wasabi cream.) and Shannon had a special Rockfish Thermador. Now I'm not a huge judge of fish, since I don't have it that often (since we are in the middle of the country and fresh fish is harder to come by). I liked my Tuna. I liked Shannon's Rockfish better (so did she). My tuna had a nice sort of done crust on the outside where they had cooked it on the grill, and then it turned flaky, and then more pink on the inside. Again, I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but I think tuna is good from raw to cooked (even canned), so I was pleased. Although the wasabi cream seemed to be have not much wasabi in it at all...it took me specifically gathering up some on my plate to get any sort of heat out of the cream. The Garlic mashed potatoes that we both had as sides were good, they were covered with a parsley butter sauce, which was a bit disturbing to me at first, since the potatoes looked shiny. The carrots they had were actually really good (Shannon's not a big fan of anything but raw carrots).

For dessert, we split a slice of Deep Dish Key Lime Pie ("Graham cracker and roasted pecan crust, topped with fresh whipped cream."). This was pretty good. It actually made me want to make key lime bars (like lemon bars, only with key lime). Since the chain is based out of Florida, it didn't surprise me to much that this was as good as it was. They said it was "homemade" though what that means, I don't know. Made in the store? Made at someone's house? Made by hand in bakery? Who knows. Anyways, it was good, and certainly a nice end to the meal.

During the meal I had two glasses of La Crema Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, which I liked. Makes me want to explore more of their wines, although, their online store, wasn't very helpful in providing me a price...(Since I wrote this morning, they have updated their site, much more helpful).

The meal and wine came out to be just under $100 without the tip. So it was fair...I would've been happier if it was $20 cheaper.

Afterwards, we wandered around the mall for a while, and then went and saw Hot Fuzz, which was quite funny and headed home (after picking up some milk and kitty litter, which cause me to joke that this whole evening was an excuse to pick up kitty litter).

Grandma

So for my grandmother's birthday, my older brother wants us all to write up memories of what we remember of her...My problem is that my memory sucks. I rarely remember much of my childhood, that's why I can get ridiculously detailed in my journal, because I forget stuff. I've gone back in my journal and what I write sparks the memories, even more then what I wrote. So here it goes for grandma.

My memories usually revolve around food. I remember perfect sugar cookies. So round with the little fork imprints on each cookie in the same fashion. Just the attention to detail that just adds to the beauty of the presentation. I remember fabulous turkey, that I only recently had anything that was close to as good (it was a guest chef at a local place who was visiting from Italy). I remember reading Peanuts and Erma Bombeck books, sitting down and watching the 10:PM news. I remember watching movies as we drove by the drive in theater. Fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden and the rhubarb... Fresh from the garden, in the strawberry rhubarb sauce, over a cold bowl of vanilla ice cream.

The cookie jar. Always full of cookies. Some many pleasent memories associated with getting a cookie from the jar.

Grandma always has a warm smile.

*sigh*

So I finally have some time to post...but the only reason that I do, is because 3 out of 4 of my servers here at work are on a network segment that is currently down (and since the only one that isn't requires one of the one that is...I'm still out of luck).

They network team are working on it, but they're getting frustrated.

Anyways...we're tightening our belts around the house, in hopes to pay off the wedding debt in quicker way. I've adjusted some of our bills to be paid weekly (1st and 2nd mortgage and Credit Card). It's been an adjustment...I also cranked them up (just a bit) so that they'd end up being nice round numbers. It does mean that every few months when I get paid 3 times in a month, we'll be making an extra payment to them. Which is a good thing. Oh well, we'll see how it goes.

So that's been causing some stress on the home front, and at work I've got a large project and a short deadline. But I'm actually having fun at work again...the work is challenging and frustrating, but it's interesting. It's not like doing the same old crap over and over. I'm also trying to write this in such a fashion that it can grow and adjust as the system grows and changes, without having to rewrite it (even partially) every time it changes. Needless to say I've been having a lot of days where I come in when I normally do and don't leave until 6 or so...and sometimes until Shannon calls and asks me when I'm coming home...(I think that's happened twice).

So stress at work...

Yeah I'm stressed out...I want to take some time off, but I have to much stuff to do.

3 Years...

So three years ago at 10:53 PM tonight, I posted my first post to my online journal....I didn't start posting to my LiveJournal until 8/9 of that year.

Sometimes I wonder why I do this, and then I go back and read about things that I forgot about, and smile because it's like my out of mind storage place. I don't post everything here, of course, but I do post a lot.

This will be my 913th post to my journal (~304 per year). I've had 40 comments on turnsout.com and 454 on LiveJournal for a total of 494 comments (~164 per year). I've had a few surprises as to who reads my journal (Catherine (formerly Shipley), Clif, one of Holly's friend's whos name I forget (sorry), etc) and I'm also surprised at who doesn't read it (my Mom, for example).

The Journal started at being a sort of recording of my experiences bidding on and moving into the house that I live in now (where the 3 year anniversary of living there is coming up pretty quick too). A lot has changed over these three years. New house, new car, dating, dating seriously, moving in together, getting married, adjusting to married life.

Anyways, it's been an interesting 3 years.

Locked out of the House

So we were leaving the house to go over to Chris and Holly's for movie night. I was locking the door...part of the key came with me, part of it stayed in the lock....Then Shannon remembered that we had forgotten the movie.

So we were like crap...locked out of the house, but we did have a cell phone, so I called Chris and had him look up a locksmith. I called, it'd take a while, so I took Shannon over there came back and I didn't have too long to wait before Strauss Safe and Lock Company (one of the employees there lives just down the street from me) showed up and unlocked my front door and got the key out of the lock.

Quick, friendly service.

I grabbed the spare key, paid the man and locked the door, carefully, and headed over to Chris and Holly's. We ended up watching Employee of the Month, which was funny (a rental not a buy).

That's the second time I've locked myself out of my house...this one, however, was not really my fault...

New easy lunch...

I bring in my lunch most days (about 95% of the time) and I'd usually bring a sandwich, fruit/vegetable and a 1/2 cup of my potassium mix (unsalted peanuts, raisins, and other dried fruit). But I'm starting to change that a bit. My new standard lunch is, carrots, potassium mix and a fruit (usually an apple).

I'm trying to be good...not that my sandwiches were particularly bad, it's just generally salty and fatty (lunch meat + cheese). And it's easy too.., just about getting the portions and washing off the apple.

Painting and work baloney

So Shannon and I started painting. On Saturday, Chris told/showed us how to start and we went from there. Not that it's that hard, mind you, but when you are uncertain of what to do, it's a better thing to just get a few hints. We finally got the ceiling covered in primer/sealer.

While doing this I got called to be on a conference call for a large scale program that I'm not really associated with, except for the secure certificate that's installed on the server. The vendor kept blaming the software upgrade on the certificate...over and over...they'd move away, by my force of will (cause after double checking to make sure that it's installed correctly, I couldn't see why they were having a problem).

We continued to paint the ceiling, getting a nice firm coat on it. the Primer stinks...like nobody's business. Cleaning the primer off the brushes and rollers with paint thinner is awful (the basement still smells like paint thinner).

The application team called again at around 9. Tried the home phone first (niether of us answered cause Shannon was painting, and I was cleaning and my hands were covered in paint). Then my cell rang and I had cleaned off my hands enough to actually answer the phone. They wanted me at a 9:30 meeting, cause the error that they were getting was still related to the certificate.

I decided to drive in for the meeting, got caught by the train, and just barely made it on time. Paint on my hands, spattered paint on my arm and some paint on my feet, going to a meeting. For the next 3 hours or so, we went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and finally someone came up with something. Apparently somewhere in the settings of their software it overrides anything that the database says and forces it to go to the name of the server (which was not the same name as on the certificate).

So 5-6 hours of my day wasted, because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with their software...

I came home, cleaned up the rest of the tools (Shannon was tired so I told her to go to bed and just leave the clean up for me (and she has also gotten her nails done that day)).

I sat back for a while just to wind down from the annoyance that I had.

On Saturday we started to pain the walls. The paint we had was much better smelling then the primer. But...of a frighteningly similar color to the color that the wall already is...it's not exactly the same, but pretty close. Around noon, Chris and holly joined us to help paint our tiny bathroom. After Chris and I got the high places, we let Shannon and Holly get the low places. I must say that Chris's edging work is very good. Certainly better then my occasional ceiling spots and mistakes. After Holly and Shannon got done, they came down and we chatted for a bit, before they took off.

The bathroom looks a lot better. There are some areas that we may need to go over again (I don't know if we just forgot, or that the tape was too far out or something. I know Shannon noticed it too.

Anyways, Thanks Chris and Holly!

Family Hero

Marine Lance Cpl. Justin Wallace, Camden Johnson, Lovina Roundy

I would just like to take a little bit of time to thank Marine Lance Cpl. Justin Wallace for saving the lives of my nephew Camden Johnson (Oldest sister's son) and my youngest sister Lovina Roundy. Camden had got pulled out by a wave into the ocean, Lovina went out to save him, but didn't have the strength to bring them both back. Justin (whom I've never met) swam out, saved Camden, and swam out again, against the ocean current, and saved Lovina too.

The story is here, though they spelled Lovina's name wrong.

so this is just bizarre

My boss sent me a few text messages about my brother. Apparently a project manager over in Cedar Rapids had his car stolen from the Y. In his car was a tennis racket. The car was found in the apartment building's where my brother was mugged parking lot. The one thing stolen from the car was the tennis racket. My brother partially mugged with a tennis racket.

Could it have been one of my co-worker's tennis rackets?

Just crazy bizarre....
