Ben Folds Paper Airplane Request Tour with Lindsey Kraft - Hoyt Sherman - 8/11/2024

Not my first, second or even third time seeing Ben Folds. I expected a good show and wasn’t disappointed. We showed up a bit close to the end, since we were running a bit late from the restaurant. So I sent, Dave, Jo and Shannon off to sit while I ran and got water for everyone.

I wasn’t expecting Lindsey Kraft. I enjoyed the playing, song and banter, and was surprised when I found out that she was also on Grace & Frankie but then disappointed when I couldn’t find her music in the normal places, though it does look like she has a couple of things around. I’m curious to see how this develops, assuming I can remember without being periodically reminded by things that come up on my music shuffle.

Ben Folds started with a set of things that he wanted to play, which reminded met that I needed to add some music from his library to my to rate list. Then, after a break, he did the airplane portion. I missed the barrage of airplanes as I ran off to go to the bathroom (initially I was fine, then I didn’t think I would make it to the show). One can see how many requests were made. It looked like a good selection and I certainly enjoyed what was chosen. Near the end of the show he picked several up in a row for the purpose of closing out the show, making sure the last songs weren’t a downer, which is certainly possible.

Good dinner, fun show and fun was had.

Flogging Molly - Road to Rebellion Tour - Val Air Ballroom - 3/5/2024

With Amigo the Devil plus Gen and the Degenerates.

I took today off cause I decided I’m to old to work the next day after a concert. I thought about getting up when my alarm went off, but turned it off instead and slept for another hour and half.

We met up with Jenny and Nathan at Either / Or and had dinner. Afterwards I went off with Jenny and Nathan and Shannon headed home.

The venue, itself, which I haven’t been to in a while (Fall Out Boy maybe?), is definitely improved and more modern. I was reminded in the bathroom of how terrible it was before the remodel. The ceiling is covered in sound dampening tiles, which will help reduce the escape of sound, which made the neighbors a bit annoyed. A good refresh and I’m looking to go to more shows there.

The show opened up with Gen and the Degenerates, which, was not for me. I don’t want to rule them out yet, but I’ll listen to some of there music. Second was Amigo the Devil, which after a song that we didn’t get, immediately was definitely for me. Enough so, that I went to go get a shirt, even after my first exposure. Unfortunately, they didn’t have anything close to my size, so I ended up with a bumper sticker. I added a bunch of the music to my library to parse and dive into.

Flogging Molly, my first time seeing them, came on and just put on a solid fast paced show. It was quite fun, energetic and even overrode the general body complaints that the rest of me started to feed back. Came away with a shirt, even after an explicit discussion from Shannon that I really need to filter out some t-shirts as they are taking up an entire closet and are packed in.

Irish Christmas in America - Temple Theater - 12/08/2023

We had dinner for the first time in a long time at Centro. The food was as expected, service was attentive, the big thing that just stuck in my craw was the person reloading the warming pan of bread to deliver to tables brought it out in a large plastic bag and dumped into the warming pan. This happened at least twice while we were dining. This seems like a thing where you would bring it out in the pan and swap the pan. The plastic bag just doesn’t seem to match the quality they are trying to put forward.

So this was time we have seen things. They tour every year apparently. While driving with Nathan yesterday, to Decorah, this came up that it was a bit better with the guy that passed away earlier this year. But even so, we enjoyed it, with the exclusion of the old man that kept playing with his phone, receiving texts and turning on his flashlight on his phone several times for no apparent reason.

The performers were quite good, I look forward to going to this again next year.

Matt and Kim - First Avenue - 10/4/2023

The first thing about this is that it was called: Matt and Kim Present: The Matt and Kim Tour Feat. Matt and Kim with special Guest Pkew Pkew Pkew.

The show was in Minneapolis, where it has been a bit since I’ve been there. It was nice to get to hang out and park in this in between time before the Twins got out (they won) and the people came down for various shows and what not. We had a few beers and dinner at an Irish pub (corned beef). As the Twins game was letting out the bar got quite busy so we headed over to First Avenue. I’ve tried to go to this place twice before. Once, on the off chance I could get tickets to a show, and another, where the show was cancelled out from under me.

About 10.5 years ago Nathan and I saw Matt and Kim opening for Passion Pit at Hilton in Ames. It was was a fun show then, and this was a whole lot fo fun, even though we’re both and the upper side of our 40s. It quite a good time and after doing some experiments, we found a decent place to stand (not behind the glass, sound just go messed, not next to the men’s room) and just had a good ole time. Pkew Pkew Pkew sounded like trash behind the glass, but on the other side they put on an ok show for something I had never heard before. Good enough I added some of their music to my new things to rate list.

For the most part everything that was played during the Matt and Kim set was on my Matt and Kim playlist. Energetic showing, lots of fun had and just a excellent show over all.

Matt and Kim perform part of “Now”

Matt and Kim perform part of “ Go Go” with a lot of balloons bouncing about.

Trombone Shorty - Hoyt Sherman - 9/17/2022

I have a collection of tickets, but as time goes by, these are rarer to even obtain, let alone be able to save. Shannon was nice enough to gather them together and present them. But going forward I’m going to try to add these as a reminder. I may not always have things to say, but it is more of a memory for myself, I suppose.

When I saw the announcement that they Trombone Shorty was coming, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had seen him in several shows I like and had some of his music in my rated collection (more has been added). So I told Shannon we were going, then invited Dave and Jo. Luckily I was the mailing list for the promoter and got a pre-sale code and got us tickets pretty close.

It was an enjoyable show, with music going for the entire time that we were there. Its a delight to see excellent performers just put on a great show.

2018 - Week 20 Cooking

This past week I went out to Vaudeville Mews to see P.O.S.  It has been a while since I've gone out to see a concert on my own, and this was one that accidentally made me do so.  While the performance was strange as he had a bit (or a lot) of vertigo, it felt very connected and I'm glad I went.  I did spend the first part after the doors opened, reading a bit.  I suppose I could've attempted to socialize, but I'm not very good at starting that.  I'm glad I went, even alone, and enjoyed it.

Friday, I took the day off again.  I was tasked for finding a replacement ceiling fan.  After searching and research, I found one that I thought would work.  Then ordered it to pickup in a Lowes store.

Having other errands to run, I got ready to leave the house, then headed off to JC Penny's to find some work clothes (and spend the gift card from my mom-in-law).  I found a couple of deals, a couple of acceptable items, one super good deal (91% off).  Ended up getting 7 items for just under $100.  I headed out to the parking lot to check in on the pickup at the store item at Lowes.  I called, after bouncing around a bit, finally talked to someone, who said they'd call me back.

I headed to Whole Foods to pick up a couple of things.  The idea for me, was Pennys > Lowes > Whole Foods > home.  So as lowes was out of the loop, I made my way home.  After a bit of time, I finally tweeted about my frustration and after a bit of responsive twitter lowes, I finally got a call back.  Apparently the items shipped to the store had not survived the trip and were not removed form stock.  Which is fair enough, but still a frustrating experience.  Then I got offered a ceiling fan from a friend (thanks Keith!), and this sounds like the new plan.  I still thought about the fan, which would probably be more effective in the living room.  So the plan changed.  Then I remembered that I'd have to run electricity and create a new light socket, which to me sounds expensive, so I'll get quotes on that.  So I cancelled my fan in store pickup.  I often complain about inventory management.  I understand it's hard to get accurate information, but if you are going to display that, it's the responsibility of everyone to get the data as correct as possible.

2015 - Week 40 Cooking

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to join Keith on a trip to Iowa City to see John Hodgman on his Vacationland Tour at the Englert Theater.  It was fun.  I don't get a lot of time one on one with Keith, so this was kind of nice.  I really enjoyed the show, laughed quite a bit a the stories and the way they were presented.  What has been sticking with me the most is the cover of So Much Wine by The Handsome Family by John Hodgman.  The performance of it and the words really have been rolling back and forth in my head.  It looks like it was even covered by Andrew Bird.  This reminds me that I'm behind on albums from Andrew Bird and a new artist to overwhelm myself with.  I took one picture before the show started, which was almost immediately liked by the performer himself (kinda cool, right?).

On a side note, I am starting to worry about where I am getting the turkey this year.

So I inspected what is in the freezer to see what is left in there.  So I have a bunch of ham skin and ham bone with the intention of making a ham stock, a rabbit, and after that it gets fairly random.  I have entirely to many frozen roasted peppers.  And I have some (duck) stock I need to use.

  • Sausage and Peppers and potatoes
  • Spicy Baked Mac & Cheese (using roasted peppers, and random leftover cheese)
  • Green Chile Burgers
  • Green Chile and Roasted Chicken Tacos
  • Chickpea, Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Curry over rice

2013 - Week 24 Cooking

This past week I had the opportunity to see both They Might be Giants and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band live for the first time.  On the TMBG side, I got the privilege of a Flood show (in reverse) , on the PHJB (doesn't work as well), I got to see some really good live jazz.  I was happy to go to both.
