37 Minutes, Game Night, and Cheese Puffs

So Friday night, I left work a bit early (ok a lot early) and headed to Cedar Rapids to see my youngest brother Isaac in Alice in Wonderland at Kennedy High School. Since I left as early I did, I was able to have a nice meal with my parents (Isaac was already at the theater, Joseph was at work). My mom made burgers and a salad, but kept saying it wasn't gourmet enough, and I tried to tell her that it's not like I eat like that everyday...I'm apparently too lazy to cook like that everyday. Anyways it was a good dinner. Most of the time it feels good to have mama cook for you.

We headed down there and saw the play. It was pretty good. I laughed a few times and Isaac did a good job. I think he was probably one of the better performers up there. At least in my biased opinion. Afterwards, I sat and chated with the parents, and when the Mad Hatter (Isaac) was done signing autographs, he came over and chatted a bit.

I headed home. So about 4 hours of driving, for 37 minutes of play...kinda funny.

So I spent large portions of Saturday preparing for and making these wonderful gruyere based cheese puffs. They went over very well, although making the dough made my wrists hurt. I made a test batch and was happy with them.

So we had a game night last night. The cheese puffs went over very well. Val brought over some brownie cake type things that were very good and Proctor brought over some granola and these wonderful caramel cookies (from CostCo). It was a nice night. Simpson's Clue, Disney's Scene It, Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture 2 and Carcassonne. Now unlike when I played with my family and relatives, this was actually fairly vicious, which, I think, made it more fun. Proctor (my boss) said that he loved the game so much that he planed to go out today to get a copy of it.

So good times, good times. thanks everyone for coming out!

So I was throwing some phone books away....

I was taking some phone books out to the bin out to the curb, and Shannon says, "We should put those on Chris and Holly's door step". Which, since they had ten or twenty phone books dumped by whomever was delivering them, would've been very funny...I almost just dumped the phone books in my car...but decided against it.

I love that lady...

Small Things...ok...maybe not so small

On my way home from Chris's on Tuesday I stopped to get gas. When the pump auto stopped it came up as 12.000 gallons. Thought that was nifty.

When I got home, an ambulance was in front of my neighbor's house (who has 24 hour nursing care). The few times that I've met her, she's been really nice, so I hope she's ok. Although I do keep seeing the nurses' cars so I assume that she just had a bit of a problem and it's resolved.

Earlier in the day, the Mediacom guys came and seemed fairly knowledgeable. I did show one of them how to ping from OS X (since in their classes they were never taught that). They said that the wire into the family room was covered by a spliced cable and wasn't a single wire back to where it's split in the house (Family room and Living room upstairs there are random cables that go to the upper level and dining room, but I think that's kind pointless and I've been pulling them down (they're not even hooked up anymore). I mean come on, it's a two bedroom house, do you really need more then two TVs?) So in talking about what can be done, they're no longer supposed to drill through supporting walls (the one between the furnace room and the family room is) and running the wire down the wall would be problematic at best. So I offered to move the access point and etc into the Utility/Laundry Room. That way, they could run a wire off the splitter straight to the source and get the best signal possible. I even let them use my rarely used cable ties (since they were in the house and have to trek out to get them). In doing that, they also checked from the house to the street, re-grounded a wire and grounded a wire in the house too. One of the two said that sometimes bad connections can be solved by grounding the wire and they'll run fine until the static charge builds up and then run like crap until the static has discharged...This does sound like a load of crap to me, but what do I know. But being that it's grounded outside and inside, it should resolve the problem. After moving my wireless access point, NAS device and the cable modem into the laundry room, it seemed to work better, with a very steady download and upload bandwidth test (just under 8 megabit down). The good thing, is that it gets these things out of the family room, so it'll be easier to move forward with the planned upgrades for that room. I still have to move the laser printer (6+ years, same toner cartridge), the color printer and the web cam (which isn't currently hooked up to anything, so no updates). I'm gonna point it out the laundry room window. I was actually thinking about that the other day, and someone could easily figure out who was home by where it is placed now. So Mediacom has done right by me. At least for now. The good thing is that there is also a phone jack right there so if I were to switch over to DSL, I'd have an easy time switching over...

We also went to see some row houses in a new development between Waukee and Clive. These are drastically different from each other and from the kind of generic houses that are built by several developers in the area. Lots of nice touches that make me happy. But when it comes right down to it, the one that we want would kind of stretch our budget to an extent that would be almost unlivable. I ran a few numbers and it'd be tough. Shannon was very excited, and here's the thing, without the wedding debt, it wouldn't be a big deal. My end of the year raise has given us a bit of breathing room again so it's not so tight as it was (going out to eat isn't as big a deal as it was, nor do I feel guilty for occasionally going out to eat for lunch at work (I'm talking every few weeks here)). But it doesn't change our financial picture so much.

What we really need to do is save more and spend less. So in a couple of years a lot of things about our financial picture changes (2.5 years for my car to be paid off, I think Shannon's Student loans are close to being paid off (mine are...uh...a while)) and hopefully we'll be able to kill that wedding debt (though we'll have to be more aggressive about it). And given that, and our current rate of salary growth, we can put more money away, and afford a nicer place. There are always new developments going up here and there, so if we want some place brand new where we can choose colors and what not, then we could...or if we wanted to buy a place and then get someone (or ourselves) to do improvements there.

Part of me though, looked at this area with dread. I really do love living in Beaverdale. I'm close to a lot of my favorite places and shops. Walking distance to some. I really am hesitant to move out. All the places we passed by on the way out to the place are very chain-like. I'm sure there's good stuff there, but you usually don't get the same flair that you can expect from something that is local and close to someone's vision.

Anyways, after some ice cream, the depression left Shannon, and she started looking forward to updating the family room. It was Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate, which was quite good.

Anyways here's a list of things we need to do:

  • Paint Upstairs Bathroom
  • Paint Kitchen
  • Paint Family Room
  • New rest of the roof
  • New windows everywhere except family room
  • new water line
  • etc...

Exchanging Email with the Mediacom guy

So I didn't ask for anything, cause what I really don't want is special treatment. I guess it is nice to do it, but I would rather have Mediacom treat all their customers better, not just me.

I basiaclly told him that I thought it wasn't acceptable to have to wait for 7 days (5 full business days) for service. They should have a Service Level Agreement and if they can't meet those times, then they know they need to hire more people (ok I didn't mention the part about the hiring, but I did mention SLA's).

Anyways, he said he'd pass it on to the VP in our area.

So we'll see.

On the other hand, DirecTV's idea of OnDemand is laughable. Menu, click, click click, and I'm watching something that I just started. I think they could probably partner with netflix or some other hoping to be sending it across the internet or something. Even if it's delayed a bit..

He tried to sell the idea Pay Per View as OnDemand...but it's not the same thing...It's really really not the same thing. It will be curious to see how things go.

My realtor wants us to look at this new development going up in Clive, so we're going to... We made a decision a while back to put a search on hold for a while we recoup from the expenses from the wedding. But we also said that if something that we both agreed would be a great place to live came up, then we would go for it...but if not, we'd improve this place and make it more livable.

So we'll see. The description sounds nice...especially the kitchen...

Walkout Lot Overlooking Treed Greenbelt, Patio with View to Trees, Spectacular Master Bedroom Suite, Granite Counters, Stainless Steel Appliances. Association Services Include Lawn Care, Snow Removal, Irrigation, and Landscaping.

Anyways...sounds good...we'll see...

So I did see a supposed response from a Mediacom rep in my livejournal...Which I find interesting. Although i do have Google search tools setup to notify me of new entries involving my name, or Shannon's name or My work (which provides a lot of news stories around the way about the health system and opinion too.

I find it interesting and I plan to email the guy on my mediacom account when I can connect to the internet again. We'll see how that goes. So as it stands my cable internet has been down for about 8 hours on monday, 26 hours from Thursday to Friday, and since about 5:30 PM yesterday (so about 16 hours now).

This past week has be a bit obnoxious at work, other then Friday, where I left a bit after 4 (cause I had to get my hippy hair cut), I haven't left work before 5:30, and tuesday It was almost 8 before I left (yes almost 11 hours at work). But the survey I was working on is ready with it's new part and the notification went out yesterday.

Last night, Shannon, Courtney and ??, Chris, Dave, Dusty, and Ryan went to see Pan's Laberinth. Which was fantastic. The combination of dreams and reality was just exactly the kind of film that speaks to me in a very dream like way. Anyways, great movie. Oh and the Fluer's Oreo Dream Bars are fantastic.

Afterwards, we (excluding Courtney and ??) headed over to perkins where several of us ate and Shannon and I had some pie. We then headed over to the Crib and watched Crank. Which was filmed in a odd manner. The way they would flip the camera (and the text) or sometimes how you could see people reading the text on the screen, was just odd. I did like how it was filmed...but by the end of the movie, I had started to get really tired (it was around 1:30 AM) and they actually had to rewind it cause I kinda fell asleep during the last few minutes.

We headed home after that...

So not having the internet is quite annoying...it's up now...but who knows when it'll go down again. Anyways... I use our online banking a lot to track our finances, I look up recipies online, I update our netflix queue quite a bit, get maps, what not....and read my comics, tech news, and etc. I'm on quite often. so it has been quite annoying.

Mediacom and Fox

So Mediacom Cable and Sinclair's Fox here in Des Moines have been in a dispute and Fox is no longer carried by our Mediacom Cable.

Initially it really miffed me that I wasn't able to get a better signal...rabbit ears sucks...I haven't used that since...oh...I think high school...and that wasn't rabbit ears, my parents had it from a TV on the roof. But in all honesty I don't watch Fox THAT much. Sunday and Wednesday is pretty much all I would watch, and Wednesday I can miss...Sunday kinda sucks...and it means you kinda have to BE at home instead of having the DVR record it...but...ugh...

Anyways what really has pissed me off is internet connectivity.

On Monday morning I tried to update my iPod, no internet connectivity, called, scheduled a dude to come out and look (since they really don't do any sort of troubleshooting over the phone anymore) and when were they gonna come out? The following Monday. This past week I've been on call and it makes it a bit tough to respond to problems that may come up if I can't get to the internet.

While we were at work, it came back up, so I called in a canceled the appointment. No biggie.

So then Last night no connectivity again and I call again and it's a outage for my entire area (whee). Supposedly to be resolved by 11:PM but no such luck for me. Checked again this morning, out again...call in, schedule an appointment for Tuesday. Even though the time frame is shorter...I mean come on...

Yes I can live without the internet, but I don't want to...and not for a week either.

I've run the numbers and between mediacom, and qwest + direct TV and it's kind of a wash...kinda kept me from switching, but I remember my update I had with my Qwest DSL up in Ames (basically two times in 4 years and only one of those was more then an hour).

I'm really thinking of switching, especially now that I don't really know anyone that works for Mediacom anymore.

Movies and Callie's Birthday

So on Thursday, we headed over to Chris and Holly's on Thursday to watch On the Waterfront. It's always nice to spend time with Chris and Holly, but the move was...well...Long. Not one of my favorites that we've watched in this series.

Wednesday night, We went to the theater to see Casino Royale. Which was actually really good. At one part we were confused, because we thought the movie was over...but then it turned out to have a whole new line of plot line. Quite fun...good villains good plot twists, and because it's early bond, the tries at the cute bond quips were not quite there yet...Although the scratching his nuts line was hilarious....

Coming back towards the present. We headed down to Cedar Rapids and the Mattas to go to Callie's first birthday party. Apparently a few people had canceled on them, so they were looking forward to the company. We saw Jane, her husband and little girl, who I haven't seen since high school or sometime around then. Other then her hair cut, she looked pretty much the same (though happier). So we drove through the freezing rain...where the roads weren't really a problem, after we got on the interstate at least. Going down it wasn't so bad.

So We had some baked pasta and some salad, both of which were really good, and a little cake from Target, which was pretty good. The pasta, as Nathan told me on the phone, was basically equal parts cheese and sausage with a bit less pasta...so needless to say it was very cheesy.

Callie was very cute and messy (pasta was all over her), and initially rejected her cake (she was probably full) but a bit later her Gramma (Jenny's Mom) fed her a little and she realized what it was and suddenly wanted cake and frosting. After Callie was all cleaned up we opened up presents (We got her a stuffed dog with a huge head). It was a fun night.

Driving home was a...well...interesting. Because of the freezing rain kept coming down, we kept the speed down, but we had to stop a couple of times to get frozen ice off the wipers. It was actually the first time I had to take my heating settings off of auto. We probably shouldn't have been driving. There were encrusted ice on the side view mirrors and the headlights and etc. it was neat to look at.

We got home safe around 1:AM or 1:30 and I parked my car in the garage (to melt the layers of ice) and headed to bed.

iPhone & PS3

So in talking with Shannon and showing her the way it works this morning, I got the statement, "Ok, but only if I can get one too". hee hee...Of course between the two phones it'll be about as much as we spent on the laptop last year...(doh!) (last night when I got home and she was sleeping and I asked, I got a no...but I think that was just her sleeping)

As part of my weekly meeting with Chris about the game, we met over at the Crib last night and talked for a short time about the game and then proceeded to spend the rest of the evening playing with and goofing around on the PS3. The graphics are pretty good and the few games we played were fun, but there was nothing really there that made me want to go out right away and get it. I'm still sticking by my original statement, I'll probably get one when the next Final Fantasy game comes out on it...before that...I'd rather have a gaming PC (Supreme Commander comes out this year, or at least it's supposed to).
